Archaeologists on the uninhabited...

AFP

Archaeologists on the uninhabited islet of Despotiko near the Cycladic island of Antiparos have uncovered the remnants of ancient dwellings dating back to the Archaic era, which they described as ‘exceptional.’ The Culture Ministry said yesterday that fragments of kouroi statues (photo) and pillars, dating from 750 to 500 BC, have been found at the site, which has been operating since May.

You're right about the odd name. It sounds more like the name of a planet in a 1950's sci fi film.

Thanks Blam. That photog of the statue... the style is more like Etruscan. I'm waiting for more finds with 'bated breath.

Do a Google Image Search on the word "kouros", and see. That is an archaic period kouros.

The statue doesn't look Persian. It appears to be Etruscan, or in a similar style. Here's the Etruscan Aplu / Apollo (Apollo being one of those non-Greek deities which was adopted by the Greeks). Even the hairstyle is the same. :')

Etruscan. That's exactly what I was thinking...

The statue photoed doesn't have the typical Victor Mature mouth that the Etruscan statues have. Perhaps it is transitional.
