LIMA, Peru -- Archaeologists have discovered a group of giant figures scraped into the hills of Peru's southern coastal desert that are believed to predate the country's famed Nazca lines.

About 50 figures were etched into the earth over an area roughly 90 square miles near the city of Palpa, 220 miles southeast of Lima, El Comercio newspaper reported.

The drawings -- which include human figures as well as animals such as birds, monkeys, and felines -- are believed to be created by members of the Paracas culture sometime between 600 and 100 B.C., Johny Islas, the director of the Andean Institute of Archaeological Studies, told the newspaper.

One prominent figure appears to represent a deity commonly depicted on textiles and ceramics from the period, Islas said.

The drawings have been interpreted as blaming George Bush for global warming.

The Nazca lines were "discovered" soon after the invention of aircraft.

It really took 90 additional years to "find" these?

Something doesn't "compute".

LOL. When I first read the title, I thought they had drawn a picture of the whole earth...or something like that.

"are believed to be created by members of the Paracas culture"

Hmmm ... I thought Steve J Gould said that it was a fact that line drawings had evolved from geological physical and chemical dynamics. Here we have purported scientists heretically claining some sort of intelligent designers. Very confusing.

" are believed to be created by members of the Paracas culture sometime between 600 and 100 B.C."

That's not very old. There are people still living in houses in the Middle East that were built about that time.

The Pyramids are about twice that old and are substantially more complex than some stick figures scratched into rock.

I think the Nazca lines are connected with the ancient Peruvians' Nazcar races.
