Scientists in Austrailia have found a new speicies of Hobbit-sized humans who lived about 18,000 years ago on an Indonesian island in a discovery that adds another piece to the complex puzzle of human evolution.

It is not at all unusual for island-based populations to become dwarfed over the passage of time. It is a reasonable selection device that favors smaller individuals during times of famine or drought. A good example are the "pygmy" mammoths discovered on the Channel Islands offshore of California. The original, normal-sized population became trapped on the island(s) as sea level rose and cut them off from easy access to the mainland. In time and after many generations, all that were left were individuals less than half the size of the parent stock.
