Exotic relics found in ancient nomads' tombs in Inner Mongolia

¡¡¡¡HOHHOT, Oct. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Judging from bronze articles unearthed from ancient tombs in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, archaeologists estimate that nomadic tribes in north China had contacts with Western civilizations approximately 2,500 years ago.

¡¡¡¡Local archaeologists found a bronze mirror and a bronze plate at the two ancient tomb sites in Liangcheng county which can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.) and the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.), which they believed could not be the work of ancient northern peoples in China.

¡¡¡¡The semi-circle button of the mirror and the plate design of a weird beast with a bird's head and a tiger's body resembled very much the style of relics excavated in the hinterland of the Eurasian grass plain extending eastwards from the Black Sea to the outer Trans-Baikalia region in Russia, said Cao Jian'en, a noted researcher with the regional archaeology institute.

¡¡¡¡The round mirror is approximately 10 cm in diameter and its semicircle button, through which archaeologists believed the mirror was tied to its user for convenience, is only about one centimeter in radius.

¡¡¡¡More than 80 tombs were unearthed from the two sites and some 200 ornaments, numerous bone utensils for daily use and production purpose, and bones of sacrifice animals including horses, oxen, sheep and dogs were found in the tombs.

¡¡¡¡Archaeologists said the animal sacrifice showed that the tombs belonged to nomads.

¡¡¡¡According to Cao, the makers of the tombs were native Rong and Di people, two minority ethnic groups in ancient China later to assimilated by the Hun people, called Xiongnu in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.- A.D. 220).

¡¡¡¡The discovery of the tombs will provide valuable clues to the research of the origin of the Hun people, Cao said.

I could see how these particular artifacts could make their way to China fairly rapidly, as high-end trade goods. We already know that there was apparently a good bit of interaction and trade among peoples and tribes in Asia, so this sorta fits right in.

Seems that the modern world is rediscovering these Kelts all over again. A 150+ year-old history text I have describes these fellers and their migrations extensively.

I saw a PBS special about some of the mummies three years ago, and figured I'd see if there was any previous documentation... yep.

Not to detract from the recent finds...but the existence of Kelts in China and Mongolia is old, old news.

Yup. But, you probably never heard anyone say that they were refugees from Noah's Flood in the Black Sea in 5600BC...or, that the Schytians were the same people as the Xiongnu, Han, Hun and Hakka Chinese...and, maybe even the Picts.

Aurel Stein came across these Caucasian mummies in China in the early 1900's, not much was made of it at the time.

Thanks. I don't think these are members of the Lost Tribes. These folks out in the Tarim Basin date to 4,000BC. I think the 'tribes' went missing around 722BC, right?

Well, yeah, I've read all those things.

The northwestern Chinese have a lot of Caucasion attributes. The Picts, I think, were probably the [original?] inhabitants of the isles [Phoenicean/Iberian?) who were displaced or absorbed by later Scythians. I think it likely that the Chinese Kelts were Scyths. This is my un-schooled surmise, mostly based upon visible physical generalities, art traditions, language, and a bit of reading on the subject....becoming foggy now.

As far as going back to 5600bc.....idunno. Facinatin' stuff!

Refering to what you posted this would place this contact around the time of Northern Israel being dispursed?

If you remember FReeper "LostTribe", he thought that the Celts were the lost tribes. BTW, FReeper "LostTribe" was banned.

I think we are in agreement here about the northern mummies around the time of the Ten Tribes being scattered, not that they are or are not. The western mummies are interesting.
