Emergency crews responded to the problem as a fire and equipment failure on Duke Energy’s power distribution grid, which resulted in customers in the Durham area [losing power], according to the Associated Press. Hello, everyone. This post is for Metmom who cannot post at this time due to the snow and winds having toppled a pole with power transformer near her driveway. She and husband cannot get off their property due to the lines being across their driveway. Her internet is down, to boot, of course. There is a widespread power outage in her area, and there's no idea how long it's going to take to get things going. Metmom is asking for a quick fix to this problem, as we can all understand. It's ok for a while, then it gets to...

The numbers of customers affected and the number of outages is being updated online through the utility’s outage tracker. Affected areas include parts of Santa Fe, Corrales, Albuquerque, Los Lunas and Valencia, as far down as Silver City, Deming and Alamogordo. The outages come as a storm system brings high winds to the region. PNM is investigating the causes of the outages...

Politico Europe, a publication marinated in green politics, has named Russian President Vladimir Putin as one of its "power players of the year" -- for, in the publication's words, "advancing Europe's green agenda." "By invading Ukraine and manipulating energy supplies to undermine European support for Kyiv, Putin has achieved something generations of green campaigners could not -- clean energy is now a fundamental matter of European security," the news outlet explained approvingly. It went on to note that Putin "invaded Ukraine after the EU had spent two years laying the foundations of its Green Deal program for zeroing out emissions...

Moore County, in the Sandhills region of central North Carolina, is mainly known for its golf courses, especially Pinehurst No. 2. The county is also home to thousands of active-duty soldiers (many of whom are Special Forces) stationed nearby at Fort Bragg, the home of the US Army Special Operations Command and the 82nd Airborne, making the rural county’s infrastructure an attractive target.Saturday night that infrastructure was attacked when numerous power substations throughout the county were targets of what the Moore County Sheriff labeled “intentional vandalism,” leaving more than 40,000 people without power.Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields reported on Facebook...

A state of emergency has been declared after the electrical power grid was “intentionally attacked” causing a major power outage in Moore County. The outages began just after 8 p.m. Saturday night across communities in the area, according to Sheriff Ronnie Fields. Sheriff Fields said firearms were used to shoot and disable equipment at two substations in Moore County. Power could be out until Thursday, according to the sheriff’s office and Duke Energy officials. Duke...

President Volodymyr Zelensky has said 10 million Ukrainians are without power after a fresh wave of missile strikes by Russia. At least seven people were killed in the strikes, with the number expected to rise. "We are doing everything to normalize the supply," Mr Zelensky said in his nightly address. Ukraine's air defence managed to shoot down six cruise missiles and five drones, he added. On Thursday, Russia pounded Ukraine with a fresh missile barrage, hitting more energy installations and other civilian buildings less than two days after one of its heaviest bombardments yet. Seven people died when a missile...

Tens of thousands are without power Tuesday as a weather system packing powerful winds and arctic temperatures continues to roar across Massachusetts, downing power lines and knocking a massive tree into a Westborough home. Winds routinely reached 50 miles per hour across Massachusetts Monday night and into Tuesday with some communities reporting 60 mile-per-hour gusts. The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for most of the state that will remain in effect until 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Senators make laws, provide for the common defense, they don't shovel snow or repair power grids Here’s what a U.S. senator does: Make laws, authorize and appropriate federal funds, provide for the common defense and the general welfare, regulate commerce among the states and with foreign nations, declare war and maintain and regulate the military, impeach federal officers including the president, advise and consent to treaties and appointments of judges and federal officials. Cruz was seen boarding a plane and, with social media, the photos quickly went viral. What followed was the dumbest “scandal” ever. The New York Times did...

These are my tips for people in TX and other places where they don’t normally have power outages in extremely cold weather and no experience with that and may not know what to do. These tips are based on my growing up in New England and also having lived in Maine and Utah, and having experienced multiple days of power outages in extreme cold. A number of houses I lived in either were poorly insulated and, in some cases, not all parts of the house had heat. 1. Check to see if any of your doors have a space at...

Millions are without power in Texas after a historic winter storm blasted the state over the weekend, creating freezing conditions that have made the roads dangerous and knocking out nearly half of Texas' installed wind power generation. Texas grid operators who spoke to the Austin American-Statesman said freezing rain and historically low temperatures caused wind turbines in West Texas to freeze to a halt, knocking out some 12,000 megawatts of energy production. Wind farms in Texas typically generate up to 25,100 megawatts of energy, almost half of which is currently out of production as the state works to thaw out...

DALLAS - A winter storm dropping snow and ice also sent temperatures plunging across the southern Plains, prompting a power emergency in Texas a day after conditions canceled flights and impacted traffic across large swaths of the U.S. Rotating power outages were initiated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, early Monday morning, meaning hundreds of thousands went without electricity for short periods as temperatures fell into the teens near Dallas and 20s around Houston. The council described the rotating outages as a “last resort to preserve the reliability of the electric system as a whole,” adding that...

By now, Monday’s massive Google outage is history for most people. While it was a minor inconvenience for some, with most Google services being down for hours on end, it was a much larger pain in the electronic ass for the tragically hip who have surrendered their “smart” homes to Google. In fact, of the services that went down, it was Google Home users who were literally left in the dark during the outage on Monday, RT notes. As a result, “smart home” users were complaining about not being able to perform once-simple tasks at their homes – like turning...

California is staying true to its reputation as the land of innovation — it is making blackouts, heretofore the signature of impoverished and war-torn lands, a routine feature of 21st-century American life. More than 2 million people are going without power in Northern and Central California, in the latest and biggest of the intentional blackouts that are, astonishingly, California’s best answer to the risk of runaway wildfires. Power — and all the goods it makes possible — is synonymous with modern civilization. It shouldn’t be a negotiable for anyone living in a well-functioning society, or even in California, which, despite...
