Intestine Crohn’s Disease A mystery surrounding Crohn’s disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, may have been solved by a new study. This image depicts an intestine affected by Crohn’s disease. ========================================================= New research may have solved a mystery surrounding Crohn’s disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease where immune defenses meant to attack invading microbes mistakenly target the body’s own digestive tract instead. Norovirus is a common infection that causes vomiting and diarrhea. It is also one of several viruses and bacteria thought to trigger disease onset in people with Crohn’s disease, but the field does not know why....

“It’s highly contagious, so it would appear that there’s a human element there, that somebody had it and was at the beach,” said Bob Peabody, Bridgton's town manager. “I think the message is, if you’re sick or your children are sick, don’t go to the beach,” he added. The beach had already closed on July 6 after several people became ill with abdominal symptoms, but reopened on July 10. Tests performed then showed acceptable levels of E. coli in the lake but not in water from two bathroom sinks. The sinks have since been removed and replaced with hand sanitizers.

[snip] Lorraine Thomas is among more than 16,000 passengers impacted by back-to-back outbreaks of norovirus on eight Sun Princess journeys between December 2016 and February 2017, who may be eligible for compensation, according to Shine Lawyers. Thomas, from Queensland, Australia, had saved up $1,700 for a 14-day voyage to New Zealand with a friend who was celebrating a birthday. The trip began well enough, aside from an overflowing toilet and cabin keycard difficulties. But about halfway into the voyage, the two friends began to suffer the awful symptoms of the dreaded norovirus. ‘It was horrendous’ When the vomiting struck, Thomas...

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Olympic officials are scrambling to contain an outbreak of norovirus at the Winter Games, which open here Friday, after 41 security guards fell ill. More than 1,200 people have been quarantined while they are tested for the virus, which has caused vomiting and diarrhea among those affected, and hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to make up the shortfall in security staff. The outbreak, revealed just three days before Friday’s Opening Ceremonies, is particularly unwelcome given the security concerns surrounding these Games, which are taking place just 50 miles from the border with North Korea.

It looks like California chefs, bartenders and deli workers might be able to take off those hated rubber gloves. Gov. Jerry Brown was presented Thursday with AB2130 -- a "do-over" bill would repeal a law requiring those handling food that goes directly to diners wear gloves and mandating that they change those gloves with every new plate or fruit garnish on a drink. The law took effect in January, but following a backlash from the public and the foodservice industry, the state legislature voted to repeal the ban. "We're grateful the assemblyman was willing to roll (the bill) back, hit...

In an average year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 21 million Americans get the norovirus, with classic stomach flu symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Eight hundred die. Symptoms come on very suddenly, within hours after a person has been exposed to it. Because no one has immunity to this new strain, more Americans — perhaps 50 percent more, the CDC says — could become violently ill. While the flu is spread mostly in the air by sneezes and coughs and a person needs to breathe in as many as 1,000 virus particles to get...
