"For many Bay Area residents who lived through it, the Loma Prieta earthquake was an unforgettable moment. The magnitude 6.9 temblor killed 63 people, 42 of them on the Cypress Freeway in Oakland when a large section of it collapsed. The quake injured 3,757 people and caused billions of dollars in damage. Dozens of buildings were destroyed in Santa Cruz, about 10 miles from the quake’s epicenter. A portion of the Bay Bridge collapsed, and in San Francisco, a fire broke out in the Marina district and several buildings collapsed. Approximately 16,000 homes were left uninhabitable. On October 5, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck near Semnan, Iran, raising online suspicions of a nuclear test amid escalating tensions with Israel. While some claim this could be related to Iran’s nuclear program, there is no concrete evidence to support the theory. Iran’s nuclear ambitions date back to the 1950s, with its current capacity to build a bomb under scrutiny.

It’s not your imagination: The ground beneath Southern California has been particularly unsteady as of late, with the region experiencing more moderate-sized earthquakes this year than it has in decades. What precisely is fueling the sequence of shakers is not entirely clear, and officials warn that prior seismic activity does not necessarily mean more powerful temblors are imminent. But the series of modest shakers have many wondering what is going on.“Earthquakes pop off around the state, and it’s a little bit like popcorn that they hit — sometimes they bunch up for reasons that we don’t understand,” said Susan Hough,...

A mysterious geyser erupted in a West Texas oilfield on Wednesday, sending salty water contaminated with oil 100 feet into the air. Responders reported a smell of oil and rotten eggs coming from the geyser, which is a sign of hydrogen sulfide gas. The fumes are poisonous and are typically present in natural gas deposits and at high levels, exposure can cause shock, convulsions, coma and death. The geyser was located off of Interstate 20 near Toyah in Reeves County, an area that is known for hydraulic fracturing sites that inject wastewater into the ground. This comes amid a series...

Today, Google announced a massive expansion of the service to all 50 US states and 6 US territories. For users in California, Oregon and Washington, users will continue to have their alerts powered by the ShakeAlert system, utilizing traditional seismometers to detect earthquakes. For all out states and supported territories, “this expansion uses the built-in accelerometers in Android...

BREAKING: 7.2-magnitude earthquake strikes off Russian coast - tsunami warning issued

While the volcano’s eruption was deadly, research shows that many people in the ancient Roman city died in building collapses from the earthquake associated with the outburst. Pompeii was destroyed by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., entombing residents under layers of volcanic ash. But there is more to this story of an ancient Roman city’s doom. Research published Thursday in the journal Frontiers in Earth Science offers proof that Pompeii was simultaneously wrecked by a massive earthquake. The discovery establishes a new timeline for the city’s demise and shows that fresh approaches to research can reveal...

The warning of a tremor that could kill more than 320,000 people is forcing Japan to think of the abstract danger of disaster in more concrete terms, says Gearoid Reidy for Bloomberg Opinion. To live in Japan is to live with the risk of a devastating earthquake at any time. Usually, however, people tend to view that threat in the abstract. It’s kind of like thinking about death - I know I’ll die someday, but I hope it won’t be today. And so far, at least, I keep getting lucky. Until we don’t. Thursday’s announcement from Japanese authorities, warning of an...

A mega earthquake could rock America's heartland - home to at least 11 million Americans - in the next 50 years. Scientists say a little-known 150-mile-long stretch through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois, has the conditions to generate a 6.0-plus magnitude quake. The National Guard this week in St Louis conducted earthquake preparation drills that simulated a focused response to an 8.4 magnitude earthquake

A larger Mag 6.4 earthquake tripped offshore of Seattle WA last night. It is the latest in a small swarm of Mag 4, Mag 5, and now Mag 6 earthquakes that began two days in the Cascadia Fault Zone that runs from British Columbia south to Northern California. The Cascadia Fault is regularly hit with Mag 8 (average interval 350 years) and occainsional Mag 9 (interval about 580 years) earthquakes. The last very large killed thousands of native Indians up and down the Washington and Oregon coastline in January 1700, and hundreds more in Japan from its tsunami waves.

...The heart of our planet has been spinning unusually slowly for the past 14 years, new research confirms. And if this mysterious trend continues, it could potentially lengthen Earth's days — though the effects would likely be imperceptible to us.Earth's inner core is a roughly moon-size chunk of solid iron and nickel that lies more than 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers) below our feet. It is surrounded by the outer core — a superhot layer of molten metals similar to those in the inner core — which is surrounded by a more solid sea of molten rock, known as the mantle,...

...Such anomalies are known as earthquake precursors, and although researchers are aware of them, it has been difficult to definitively identify a pattern of so-called red flags that could indicate an impending earthquake. This is because of the complexity of precursor interactions and their variability in different earthquakes and geographical regions. However, with every earthquake that researchers analyze using increasingly sophisticated satellite technology, these patterns are slowly emerging.Professor Mehdi Akhoondzadeh of the University of Tehran assessed a variety of satellite data from the run up to and aftermath of two earthquakes that occurred on 6 February 2023 near the border...

A candidate running for Senate in New Jersey was ruthlessly goaded on social media after claiming the “climate crisis” was to blame for the Friday earthquake that rocked the tri-state area. Green Party member Christina Amira Khalil shared the controversial message just minutes after the quake, which was the strongest temblor to strike near the Big Apple in 140 years. “I experienced my first earthquake in NJ. We never get earthquakes. The climate crisis is real. The weirdest experience ever,” Khalil wrote on X.
