Incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he wants President-elect Trump to select a "mainstream" candidate to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
Asked by NBC on Sunday whether he was comfortable filibustering any Trump nominee for the court, Schumer dodged answering the question directly.
"I hope that President Trump picks a mainstream candidate," Schumer said. "A mainstream candidate is somebody you may not agree with on every issue, but basically believes in precedent."
NBC's Chuck Todd interrupted Schumer and asked, "What does that mean? Can he nominate somebody in your mind that is, say, [Texas Sen.] Ted Cruz? Is he too conservative for you?"
"I'm not going to get into specific candidates, but we'd hope it would be mainstream," Schumer answered. "If it is mainstream, you have to remember, the last four nominees, two from President Bush, two from President Obama, got bipartisan support on the bench. If he doesn't nominate a mainstream candidate, we're going to go at him with everything we have, or her. Go at the candidate with everything we've got because this is so, so important."
Schumer expressed a willingness to work with Trump on issues where the president-elect and Democratic Party agree in a series of Sunday morning interviews. Trump responded by praising Schumer on Twitter.

The nuclear option currently does not apply to SCOTUS. The Senate rule makers should actually change the filibuster rule so that it’s old school, where Chuck You Schumer and company would actually have to talk a bill to death, subject to override by a 2/3 vote.
Chuck You and Co. would sure look funny reading from a phone book to stop a perfectly decent SCOTUS nominee. They would make a spectacle of themselves and, hopefully, ensure a massive loss in 2018.

My thoughts exactly. This is an example of why we on the right should never take anything seriously that these idiots say. They should be laughed at and ridiculed at every opportunity.
What? Why would it be so so important as to whom is sitting on a procedural court who's primary duty is to look at law, look at the constitution and say 'yes, that's permitted' or 'no, that is not.'
Is it So so important because you believe that this is not the constitutional duty of the court? That you believe that the court is simply a shortcut to our representative government where they can create and pass laws with judicial decisions?
If that's what you believe, then indeed, it is as critical as possible not to choose a jurist who believes in preserving bad decisions, but instead concentrates on what the constitution actually permits government to do, and more importantly, what it restricts government from ever doing.

Schumer does come across as someone that Trump can and will deal with in areas that don't align with traditional Republican positions. Trade, and spending the most immediate and notable items.
Reid couldn't have picked a better time to hang it up. He would have been nothing but a turd in the punchbowl no matter the legislation.
