Hillary Clinton Picks a Doomed Fight With Americans Over Guns
Reason Magazine ^ | May 10, 2016 | J.D. Tuccille

"Yesterday, once again, this time horrifically on live television," says Hillary Clinton in a video on her presidential campaign website, "we saw the terrible consequences of gun violence." As it turns out, she's not talking about civilian deaths from drone strikes or bombing raids on hospitals by the U.S. government, but instead about a criminal shooting spree in the United States. Sure enough, the Washington Post pointed out last week that one of Clinton's signature issues heading into the general election is tightening restrictions on the ownership and use of guns by Americans.

That's a tall order in a country where gun ownership for recreational shooting and self-defense is wildly popular. Nobody knows for sure, but the best estimate is that there are north of 300 million firearms in private hands in this country. The ownership of those weapons is closely intermingled with the concept of personal liberty and resistance to abusive government in the minds of a great many Americans, as documented by scholars who both approve and disapprove of that association. Unsurprisingly, federal lawmakers from both major parties are hesitant to wade into the issue, either because they share the aversion to restrictive gun laws, or because they're leery of voters who do, and who are wont to collect scalps on election day. Just last November, analysts attributed aggressive advocacy of gun control as the key to Democratic losses in Virginia's legislative races.

But Hillary Clinton has a plan.....

The second amendment has nothing to do with either of those things, and everything to do with regulating the US militia (read “armed forces “).

But personal ownership of firearms was an unquestioned right at that time, covered properly by Article IX Concerning Rights not Enumerated.

The Second Amendment went BEYOND this ( literally ) unquestioned right, and affirmed the right of states to support their own militias.

So I would deny that it has "nothing to do" with the private ownership of firearms.

Yeah, historically a loser for the 'rats. In the past 7+ years more people than ever have purchased record setting numbers of firearms. Probably more of a loser of an issue than ever. So sure, please Hillary, by all means alienate the millions of firearms owners, millions of new owners, and their friends and family members who may not be owners yet, but who are getting all the positive feedback. No, really Hillary, this time it could work... {snort}

Apparently, fortunately for us, her campaign manager is an idiot.

I like your tagline and agree with it. Not a threat, unless someone makes it one.

Well, if “Scholars” disapprove of me owning, carrying, and using a handgun, then, I guess I’ll Turn them in tomorrow to them, one bullet at a time.

The chief author of the 2nd clearly defined what the militia was in the federalist papers
“the militia is every person in this country. We are the militia”

It’s incomprehensible that this woman is worthy of this much protection. Let her pack her own heat.

No. "

They never have. Have they all of a sudden grown balls?

You're going to have to explain that one a little more...

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms” means, I think, that the people have the right to maintain an armed force, an army, on whatever scale. This is in potential opposition to the federal authority, you see. The significance of it has been lost with the complete obliteration of the autonomy of the “states” ... a misnomer now for “provinces”, however proudly we may bear the name. Ironic, isn’t it?

Does it also mean an individual right?

According to the latest issue of America's First Freedom from the NRA, the gun industry has grown 158% since the Kenyan took office.

It'll probably triple if it seems that the Cackler might be elected.

Is our toothless Congress ever going to stand up to this usurpation of it's rights and the will of the Founders?

Not with the likes of McConnell and Ryan in charge. Anyone who stands up to them is roundly vilified.

Yes, once a Republican president tries the same thing, congress will rise up as one demanding adherence to the constitution. Bet on it.

Exactly correct, which is why Trump cannot dictate as Obama has done.

Trump is not black, and Trump is opposed by all media cartel.

Trump can accomplish much, but it will be in opposition to the media and much of the political elite.
