The Sojourner
The Bible ^ | 8/17/2019 | madison10

Here it is NKJV:

Leviticus 19

33 And if a stranger dwells with you in your land, you shall not mistreat him. 34 The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as [a]one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

TOPICS: Current Events; Religion & Culture; Religion & Politics; Theology
KEYWORDS: christianity; foreigner; holiness; leviticus; nativeborn; stranger
This particular passage is part of tomorrow's Sunday School lesson. The lesson book is slanted a bit toward the foreigner. (My church, during that early "cage" reporting, jumped on the bandwagon condemning the President without facts. There were MANY ticked off members. We are NOT a mainline church) Anyone have a take on this? What does your church say about the illegal issue?

“The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as [a]one born among you,...”

If the stranger violates your laws, customs, etc., treat the stranger as you would treat one “born among you”, that is to say punish the stranger in accord with the law or shun the stranger in accord with custom.

The Old Testament is full of foreigners who sojourned in Israel. The one thing they did that was in common, was to choose to follow the true God, the God of the Isreaelites.

Rahab the Harlot and Ruth were both foreigners who were in the Messianic line. They both forsook their old gods.

Today, we are all descended from immigrants (even the Native Americans, who wandered south and drove out and killed the pre-Columbian tribes of their day). However, anyone who will forsake their old country and pledge allegiance and loyalty to the United States of America, is welcome to me.

Foreigners who bring their foreign flags to our country are invaders.

Read the story of Balaam and what happens when you let foreign women come to your land and continue the worship of their foreign gods. It might help to know this before your “lesson” tomorrow.

A “sojourner” - the actual word in the original text - is someone on a TEMPORARY stay. AKA a tourist, a guest, a visitor. NOT someone moving in permanently.

Anyone who fails to assert this distinction is being deceptive.

That scripture is not 'unconditional'. It's pretty typical of the left to use the Bible to try and give their agenda credibility; they do it by cherry picking the verses. But read further to Leviticus 20:2 and you will find:

"Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones."

Reminds me of Matthew 7 which starts out, "Judge Not". The left scratches out the entire chapter except those 2 words, while the chapter itself is full of those things that we are to judge or be wary of.

That didn't work out too well for Solomon as he allowed the strange wives to bring their customs and deities with them and turned from God to idolatry.

The lesson here is, welcome strangers, but reject their ways.

The word “sojourn” mean a short stay in a temporary place.
Words mean things and the liberals are re-interpreting this word to mean permanent immigrant. It does not. Anytime the word “sojoun” is used, it literally means someone who is in town temporarily, probably to trade.
The Bible never condones law breaking in any form. None of the verses that mention “sojourner” are talking about a permanent immigrant ignoring the law.

There are those who would cherry pick from the Bible ideas that affirm what they want while ignoring the rest of scripture.

For those who would like to exactly follow God’s commands to Israel on the “sojourners” among them, will they also support capital punishment for Sodomites and adulterers?

Compare this passage on who was allowed to become a full-fledged Israelite:

Deuteronomy 23:2-7 (NKJV)
One of illegitimate birth shall not enter the assembly of the Lord; even to the tenth generation none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the Lord.
An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter the assembly of the Lord; even to the tenth generation none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the Lord forever, because they did not meet you with bread and water on the road when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. Nevertheless the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam, but the Lord your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you. You shall not seek their peace nor their prosperity all your days forever.
You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were an alien in his land.

The idea of sojourners also is different from enemies:

Deuteronomy 7:1-3 (NKJV)
When the Lord your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, and when the Lord your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son.

Also, read Judges 1. Israel was unable to defeat some of their enemies completely. But, later, when Israel was stronger and no longer at war, they put these foreigners under tribute—meaning the foreigners had to pay special taxes for living in the land. This would be the equivalent to allowing Native American / Indian tribes to maintain their ethnic and cultural identities but taxing them for this privilege.

It is true that God demonstrates His mercy to foreigners and others who are often oppressed. This should not be misapplied to criminals, wicked people, and enemies of a nation. No nation should be expected to welcome foreigners or “sojourners” who behave like enemies. It is reasonable to expect foreigners who wish to immigrate to not only be self-supporting but also to have something to contribute for being allowed to have access to all of the privileges that go with living in a particular country.

Also, only Israelites could own land in Israel. A foreigner could only do so by first converting to Judaism. And not all foreigners even had that option, but eventually their descendants might have that option. In most cases it took multiple generations. Imagine if the children and grandchildren foreigners who immigrate to the US were still considered foreigners for 10 generations, like some of the nationalities who existed in Canaan. This would be like saying no Muslim immigrants could become citizens, and their children could not become citizens, but after several generations of converting to Christianity they could then become citizens. Or the same might go for certain nationalities.

Being part of the “congregation of the Lord” had certain privileges that did not extend to all of the “sojourners” who lived in the land of Israel lawfully. Further, a person could be “cut off” from the congregation of the Lord, which meant that his children could also be outside of the commonwealth of Israel. For example, anyone who refused to participate in certain feasts could be “cut off”. This would be like insisting that any immigrants who were citizens of the US must celebrate Independence Day, Columbus Day, and Thanksgiving, or lose their citizenship. Engaging in sexual deviancy resulted in such “cutting off”.

Liberals would like to twist scripture to make God out to be a liberal. They really have no interest in following and serving Him, as they just want to have God serve their own agendas.

A convert to Judaism is called a ‘ger’ (sojourner, dweller). The word is also sometimes used to mean stranger. A sojourner is expected to follow Jewish law and assimilate Jewish culture.

Most Christians always prefer the Prophets to the Five Books, so how does your church view Ezra 10, putting away foreign wives and their children?

To focus on that one verse would be dishonest without the other verses dealing with foreigners. They were expected to obey Jewish laws. Earlier posts focused on the word 'foreigner'. They were also called 'strangers'. Example:

Exodus 20:10: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.

Other examples; Exodus 12:19, Exodus 12:48, Leviticus 16:29, Leviticus 17:12

These passages emphasize an aliens submission to Israel's laws. If the sermon doesn't point out the differences between those who enter legally, and those who spit at our laws to get in, then the sermon is dishonest. No scripture says that being a foreigner is a get out of jail card for lawbreakers. This nation has a legal process for immigrating.

Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil. (NASB) Romans 13:1-4

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. (NASB) 1 Peter 2:13-15

The plain truth is that they all can’t come here. Millions of people want to move to Israel. Guess what: they can’t move there! If they did, it would no longer be Israel. Try to go to Saudi Arabia and open up a church. The last thing you see would be the world spinning around as your head rolls across the sand. So somebody has to have the courage to tell the world, “Sorry, but you can’t come here!” Israel’s mission was and is to be a light to the Gentiles and to Teach the Knowledge of G-d to the ends of the earth. She cannot do that if she loses her identity. America, the only other Covenant nation has a mission as well. It is to teach the nations godly principals that bring national redemption; not to invite their young men to flee their homelands for money. That is not the mark of manhood. Real men rise up and destroy their oppressors and tyrants and liberate their loved homes. The cheap compassion of “open borders” makes its promoters feel good and is an emotional appeal to win votes. Those who are pushing it will not bear the burdens of what follows. Those consequences will be placed on the backs of the American people. Turn the ship around; there are rocks ahead.

I don't know if anyone will give three cents for this explanation, but the Hebrew word ger (which is translated "soujourner") has a very technical meaning in Halakhah: it refers to a non-Jew who is Halakhically permitted to live in Israel.

There are two categories of gerim. The ger tzedeq is a full convert to Judaism; the ger toshav is an observant Noachide who has testified before a Jewish court that he observes the Noachide Laws. This latter category isn't active right now since this can only be done when the laws of the yovel (Jubilee) year are in effect. At any rate, it doesn't mean what all liberals believe it means.

This is what happens when you interpret a translation of a G-d-dictated word without regard to the Oral Torah.
