It’s the other Shoa.

More subtle.

Fake poll from the Tribune.

If they reject the religion, they aren’t jews.

With THOSE definitions, who would want to claim any of it?

Title is misleading. I’ll bet quite a few Christians would say no to those definitions, too.

What was the median age of those being asked this question?
Most young people (under 35) go through a time of believing themselves to be either atheist or at the least agnostic.
Some grow out of it and some don’t. I went through something like this myself. “Atheist” at 17 y/o, Believing-Again by age
30. Sometimes when your High School dreams stop coming true, and real life kicks you in the a**, you are ever so thankful for your inner faith in God. I was, and still am.

You might have a point if it weren’t for the fact that most US Jews are Hellenized and hyper-liberal.

I’m surprised it’s that low to be honest.

“Close to 17% of the Jewish respondents identified themselves as Sunday Stalwarts (Shabbes stalwarts, obviously); about 8% each said they were God-and-Country Believers, Diversely Devout, Relaxed Religious, or Spiritually Awake; 17% said they are Religion Resisters, and a whopping 25% called themselves Solidly Secular.”

This mirrors my personal observation. The first category has lots of children, so I’d expect those numbers to change substantially in a decade or so.

correction....
“42 percent of Americans with Jewish-sounding names reject the Jewish faith”

there, fixed it.

it is a similar problem for many Protestant Christian and Catholic churches ... but the percentages vary, of course.
persons with Jewish heritage, grandparents say....have one of the worst percentage scores on the faith index, but many churches only have higher faith commitments because they’ve separated from the PCUSA/Episcopal type “progressive churches”...who appear, for the most part, to have jumped the shark entoto (abandoned anything resembling any form of genuine faith).

America as a whole is experiencing a faith crisis...
as for many folks, communistic politics (communism, socialism, democrapic socialism, progressivism, or ‘social justice’...... is their new substitute-for-a-genuine-faith-commitment)

it is very very very very very sad for them, and of course sad for the rest of us insofar as they are able to cram their Satanic policies down on the rest of us through their misuse of governmental power

pray for America (there ARE millions of real faithful out here, still...)

I say this as a man who grew up in a Jewish household after my mom remarried, has a Jewish wife, and has two kids being raised Jewish.

The thing about most American Jews is that most of them really don’t believe in Judaism. They believe in the rituals and traditions.

That obviously excludes the conservative Jews, but it is certainly true of most of the reformed Jews I know. And I know a lot of them.

“I’ve heard that Israel is very secular as well.”

Depends. There is a strong element that is secular. But they are not the majority.

Certain institutions are very secular — e.g., the courts.

No, they are Jewish heretics.

I know a lot of conservative Jews (including myself), who have a wide range of opinions on politics, but not necessarily on religion.

In fact, the preservation of Conservative Judaism (which is an organized segment of Judaism) is strong and vital but has been under attack by the Secular Jews and Reform Jews/Reconstructionist Jewish school (many Recon women Rabbis are literally “Marxist-lites” and are more of a threat to Judaism today than is anti-Semitism because it corrodes from within like “Marxist-lite red ants”.

In the next presidential election in 2020, I would not be surprised if the Jewish vote for Donald Trump is over 40-45% because many American Jews are now waking up to the betrayal of Israel by the Democrat Party Left (Sanders, Ellison/Lopez, Warren, etc) that has been going on openly and covertly since the 1960’s.

You don’t have to belong to a shual or even go there to be “Jewish”. Judaism consists of a set of moral, ethical and legal principles to be followed throughout life, from the “Ten Commandments” to the “Commentaries”, “Tanach”, and even Martin Buber.

They are designed to guide a Jewish person (or even non-Jewish people) in a way of life, one that is positive, honest, productive, tolerant, and proud.

That does not include the Jewish Left, esp. many of the “Fake Jews” of the Democrat Party.

Vainly the builders build
If the Lord keeps not the city

Never, never will He sleep
Never sleep nor slumber

Will keep you Israel

What precisely is a Jew? That is a sincere question.

I have been studying the Word - Old and New Testaments - since age five. I was attending pastoral conferences by special invitation starting from age sixteen.

I learned at age eleven that I was part Semite on my mother’s side (via a woman of real Hebrew lineage, Hebrew name and Hebrew surname). I was pleasantly surprised: I had spent so much time studying the Israelites that I was glad to know I shared some kinship with them. (It was not a big deal in our Christian family - which was my mother did not make much of it.)

I studied Hebrew at a public university. I was the lone Gentile. Only the teacher (a native of Israel) and I knew the Old Testament to any significant degree. This was entirely germane: As a formal language without a country for two millennia, Hebrew became a stagnant language. Modern Hebrew is very close to ancient Hebrew. For that reason, this teacher, though she had degrees in Hebrew and English, often used Old Testament passages to teach usage in context. I usually understood those contexts; the “Jews” in the class usually did not.

So when I say they were ignorant, I know this to be true; yet the rest of the class were all “Jews”: secular, hedonist, atheist, as far as I could glean. Each had gone through Bar Mitzvah or Bas Mitzvah - but it obviously meant little.

They were not hostile to me, but they were not accepting either (although the teacher to some extent was). Many of them had spent time in Kibbutzim in Israel. They were very aware and proud that they were so-called Jews: It was very much an us-against-them environment.

I have wondered ever since on what basis they are Jews?

They say it is not a race.

They say it is not an ethnicity (not really, since they are culled from any and all ethnicities).

They say it is not a religion (not really, since so many of them denounce Judaism).

What is it, except an excuse to think they are better than everyone else?

The closest I have seen to a valid answer was a post recently (where I do not recall, perhaps here): that they are a modern socio-political construction, and are not the “Judahites” of the Biblical times.

I now find the use of the term, Jew, to be rather absurd than valid in today’s social, religious, and political contexts.
