“If they reject the religion, they aren’t jews.”

No, they are Jewish heretics.

I may be wrong, but I think one thing Catholics and Jews have (sociologically) in common, is that they trend to see their religion as an ethnic trait, and thus they will continue to call themselves "Catholics" and "Jews" even when they have not one iota of religious belief.

"Of course I'm Catholic, I mean, with a name like Wladislav Przybyszewski, what else could I be?" (Last episode of Church-going: Easter, 1972.)

"Catholic? Bridget O'Malley? You had to ask?" (Religious conviction: there is nothing dumber than a religious conviction.)

"Josh Cohen, Jew, yeah, Jewish atheist. I promise you it's more atheist than any other kind of atheist."

So it tends to skew the statistics. I get the impression that an atheist from an Evangelical family will just be an atheist. That's it. They'd never call themselves Evangelicals. But no matter what you believe--- everything, anything or nothing -- the ex-Catholics and ex-Jews will still be there "identifying" as Catholic and Jews and messing up the Catholic and Jewish statistics.

Ya think?

I trust I have made myself sufficiently obscure....
