Catholic church attendance in the United States fell by six percent between the pontificates of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, the sharpest drop in decades, a new Gallup poll has revealed.
An average of 39 percent of U.S. Catholics attended church weekly during the heart of the Francis papacy, from 2014 to 2017, Gallup found in a survey released April 9, which represents a significant drop from the 45 percent of Catholics who attended weekly Mass from 2005 to 2008, in the early years of the Benedict pontificate.
Weekly Mass attendance among American Catholics had stabilized in the mid-2000s at around 45 percent, after falling sharply during the period comprising the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and its aftermath, which many Catholics experienced as a time of confusion and upheaval.
The downward trend has resumed during the Francis years, falling more abruptly than it had since the 1970s.

Does this qualify as a great falling away? Hold fast! Your redemption draws near.
Not surprising since a growing number of clergy support illegal aliens and preaching tolerance of the homosexual lifestyle!
Wow, rank and file catholics don’t like pedophile communists.
Stop the presses.
I have heard that some of the more traditional denominations and churches are seeing growth.
But here we see the Catholic Church declining. Interesting that pope Francis is presiding over decline.
Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?
Let’s face it. Francis has started his own church.
The bishops in the major archdioceses are big lefties. Wouldnt be surprised if the DNC was kicking money back to them since so many major city clerics actively support and protect illegal aliens!
That was the whole point of this final pope’s underlord ministry..
RE: “Gallup: Drop in U.S. Catholic Church Attendance Under Pope Francis Sharpest in Decades”
Things are going to get real bad after Pope Francis goes to meet The Lord .
He has appointed enough like minded members of the clergy to high level positions that it is hard to see how the church will be able to reach a consensus on the next Pope
It is highly likely that the next Papal Conclave will either result in a failure to select a new Pope or it will elect an even more progressive Pope than Francis.
Either way, it is highly likely to end in schismatic conflict within the Church.
Not surprising. But a bad Pope has no influence on my Catholicism.
Not in my Archdiocese.
This kind of stuff tends to happen when a man who serves God is replaced with a man who serves Marx.
What is his end game? If it's the same as other Christian denominations that are hemorrhaging faithful until there are none left, it seems impossible. Are the gates of hell prevailing against it...the Church, that is?
That isn't supposed to happen.
We have had some bad or mediocre bishops here in Vermont, and a mix of parish priests.
Currently, we have a priest from the Philippines as our parish priest. In other words, we used to send out priests to the Third World, but now they are sending them to us. He is a good man, thankfully, better than most of our former American priests. But I don’t think he’ll stay here more than three years, and who knows what we’ll get next?
Anyway, I agree with you that the Pope will have no influence on my Catholicism. As long as we have the Sacraments properly performed, that’s what really counts. But sadly our church has pretty well emptied out over the years.
30% of church members at a typical evangelical Christian Church are former Catholics.
That includes me.
I expect that number is probably growing because of Francis, too.
Thats what the Catholic Church gets when it elects as Pope a socialist pretending to be a holy man.
It’s all proceeding according to plan. It’s the “fundamental transformation” of yet another great institution.
Anyone who views Francis positively is a cafeteria Catholic.
Francis is not naïve. He is an adherent of Liberation Theology. His intent is destroy the Catholic Church as Christ founded it and remake the Church in the Liberation Theology mold.
Similar situation in Maryland.
We had a priest from Cameroon- thank God for him! He was excellent and even years younger than many of the other priests, he gave good example.
