Massachusetts Bishop Calls for Professor to Disavow “Blasphemous” Views on Sexuality of Jesus

A Massachusetts bishop has called the notions of a New Testament scholar in his diocese “highly offensive and blasphemous,” and has called on his Jesuit college to ask him to publicly disavow his writings on the sexuality of Jesus.

Professor Tat-siong Benny Liew, the chair of New Testament Studies at the College of the Holy Cross, has published articles claiming Jesus was a “drag king” and said the relationship between the Father and Son was homosexual and masochistic in nature.

In one article, Liew said the centurion who approaches Jesus to heal his servant was actually speaking about his lover and described the relationship as “pederastic.” Liew said the biblical author affirmed the relationship, adding this “may also be consistent with Matthew’s affirmation of many sexual dissidents in her Gospel.”

Bishop Robert J. McManus of Worchester said he was “deeply troubled and concerned” that someone who authored such things holds an endowed chair at the Catholic institution.

Good. Nothing may come of it, but it’s good to see at least a few American bishops doing the right thing. That professor is WAY over the line.

The Jesuit order has descended into an unspeakable cabal of deviants.

The professor is vicious. He ought to be unemployable until he retracts and cleans up his perverse effluent.

Good on Bishop McManus for speaking out. Ten thousand Catholics should surround that place, armed to exorcise.

In another article I read, Holy Cross defended this guy because the article in question was written a decade ago, was intended to be read only by a small number of scholars, and was intentionally provocative to stimulate discussion. It has never been part of the content of the courses he teaches, or so they say.

But — assuming that is true —how does a person with any respect for Jesus Christ, even if he is not personally a believer, ever allow such thoughts to cross his mind, much less publish them? And how does a supposedly Christian college allow him to remain there?

Permanently banned and formal excommunication is too good for these open perverts and subversives.

This poor bishop will hear no support coming from the Conference.

I would like to see the US Conference feel the heat. Not sure the faithful bother to press them for much of anything. The staffers do their work and Leftist lobbyists plot their agenda, these are around them in force.

When Rome left Torah the fix was in. Eventually she ended up 180 Degrees in opposition to it. The Nazzarean said that the Torah must be obeyed till the end of time. (Matt. 5).

Professor Tat-siong Benny Liew

Just that name should be grounds for dismissal.

The Jesuits should have stuck to their original Constitutions and remain very small. The life has too many features that look attractive but in terms of seeking holiness turn out to be defects and not a feature for most people, though they look like features from a human perspective. They should be suppressed again.

It is good to know that some bishop somewhere has a standard that he is willing to make public.

Father Philip Boroughs, president of the College of the Holy Cross, said Liew is a dedicated teacher, engaged scholar, and a man of faith.

Sure doesn't sound like it.

No, Liew is lewd.

Is this guy even a Catholic? It looks like he now teaches at Berkeley and I can’t find his religious affiliation. Maybe somebody else can.

And never trust a man who smiles widely in every photo taken of him!

Jesus is a saint He had no sexual desire

Then He didn't share fully in our humanity.

Hebrews 4:14-16 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

The OP is obviously not written by a New Englander. There’s no “h” in Worcester, either written or pronounced. The correct pronunciation is “Wus-tah”.

Then you have Psychoanalytic Mediations Between Marxist and Postcolonial Readings of the Bible by Tat-Siong Benny Liew

Liew is currently also the Executive Editor of the journal, Biblical Interpretation (Brill) and Series Editor of the Sheffield Phoenix Guide to the New Testament.
