Bishop: Ministry to Gay People Must Include Call to Chastity

Bishop Toal pointed out this was expected of all Catholics who are not married

The Bishop of Motherwell has asked his priests to encourage those experiencing same-sex attraction to “lead a chaste life”.

Bishop Joseph Toal issued his statement after a diocesan priest published a Facebook post that was subsequently widely shared. The priest, Fr Paul Morton of St Bride’s Church in Cambuslang, wrote: “We must do everything we can to redress the harm that has been done in the past by the negative stance we seem to have taken up [about gay people].”

Bishop Toal said he had been asked about the subject by a number of priests. “One such approach commended to me is to make available the Courage ministry/programme,” he said.

“This encourages those who live with same-sex attraction to live a chaste life – which is also expected of all heterosexual Catholics who are not married – supported by the sacramental and prayer life of the Church.”

How can “gay” people practice chastity since the thing that makes them “gay” is their sexual proclivities?

Bishop Toal will never be elevated to the college of Cardinals by the current pope.

Good for Bishop Toal.

Chastity for “gay” people is exactly the same as chastity for “straight” people. It calls for sexual continence except for acts in the procreative form in the context of the sacrament of matrimony. It requires striving for purity of heart and mind and intention toward all people as a reflection of divine love.

Somehow the pope forgot to say this when he was slobbering over gays in the church.
Whatever happened with the gay sex orgy in the Vatican? eh? hidden from all future newscasts?

What I’m trying to say is that but “gay” people are only “gay” when they are living a lifestyle of deviant sex.

The deviant sex is the very thing which defines their “gay” identity.

Well, yes, that is correct if you define “gay” by the behavior. On the other hand, if you define it as “experiencing sexual attraction to the same sex,” then you can talk about “chastity for gay people” in the same terms as “chastity for all people.”

Among those who regularly write on this topic, there is no agreement regarding using the term “gay.”
