Cardinal Kasper Asks for Prayers for Synod, Saying ‘a Battle is Going On’

The cardinal says he hopes the synod would find a 'common answer, with a large majority'

Catholics should let their bishops know their hopes and concerns for the forthcoming Synod of Bishops on the family, but even more importantly they should pray that the Holy Spirit guides the bishops’ deliberations, Cardinal Walter Kasper has said.

“We should all pray for it because a battle is going on,” he said in a speech presenting his new book, Pope Francis’s Revolution of Tenderness and Love, published in English by Paulist Press.

Bishops attending the synod, scheduled for October 4-25, will be called to discern ways the Church can communicate joy to all families, including those who have experienced the brokenness of a sacramental marriage, he said.

“Hopefully, the synod will be able to find a common answer, with a large majority, which will not be a rupture with tradition, but a doctrine that is a development of tradition,” the cardinal said, adding that if the Church believes it has a “living tradition”, it means that there is room for it to develop.

Pope Francis chose Cardinal Kasper to make a presentation to the College of Cardinals in early 2014 about possible ways the Catholic Church could welcome some divorced and civilly remarried Catholics back to the sacraments.

Kasper thinks the Church is a mobocracy.

Maybe Kasper needs to find some very early manuscripts of the Gospels which omit the verses where Jesus condemns divorce and remarriage.

I’m a divorced and remarried Catholic. I would rather be cut off from the Eucharist than have my Church betray herself.

I attend events at various Protestant and Evangelical churches around town. At every one of them I keep encountering people who tell me “I used to be Catholic”.

Most times a marital break-up is at the heart of their story. They all tithe to the new churches they have joined.

Don’t think the Vatican has not noticed.

It's Great Lent. Is this the time for such a thread?

"Do we forgive our neighbors their trespasses? God also forgives us in His mercy. Do we refuse to forgive? God, too, will refuse to forgive us. As we treat our neighbors, so also does God treat us. The forgiveness, then, of your sins or unforgiveness, and hence also your salvation or destruction, depend on you yourself, man. For without forgiveness of sins there is no salvation. You can see for yourself how terrible it is." St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, Journey to Heaven

Cardinal Kasper Asks for Prayers for Synod

To whom, exactly, does he ask us to pray?

From the Pope's sermon today:

"They the corruption of rigidity in their hearts". They felt pure because they observed "the letter of the law". "The law says you must do this and this". "But these were not saints, they were corrupt, corrupt because that type of rigidity can only move forward in a double life, and those who condemned these women then went to look for them behind, in secret, to have some fun '. The rigid are - to use the word that Jesus gave them - hypocrites: they lead a double life. Those who judge, let us think about the Church - all three women are allegorical figures of the Church - those who judge the Church rigidly have double life. With such rigidness you cannot breathe".

It appears he talks about his "mercy" fixation every other day.

Good question. Cardinal Sarah also recognizes there's a battle going on; but he's on the opposite side of Kasper's.

The idea that would consist in placing the Magisterium in a nice box by detaching it from pastoral practice -- which could evolve according to the circumstances, fads, and passions -- is a form of heresy, a dangerous schizophrenic pathology. I affirm solemnly that the Church of Africa will firmly oppose every rebellion against the teaching of Christ and the Magisterium.

I'll pray to Cardinal Sarah's God for a successul Synod outcome. I will never pray to Kasper's god, no matter what depths of Hell he may reign from.

The good people below also recognize there will be a battle at the Synod. I doubt they're praying to Kasper's god.

Kasper wants to reduce the number of Germans who are choosing to opt out of paying the Church tax.

I suppose he was including Susanna there? But the young Daniel didn’t show much mercy to the old lechers.
