We thus face a difficult and dangerous situation. A society that identifies the two parties in marriage as Spouse 1 and Spouse 2 has lost sight of a deep truth of human nature. We must do everything in our power to distinguish this falsification of marriage from its true form as the lifelong union of a man and a woman. In some contexts, consistent testimony to the truth about marriage may require clergy to refuse to serve as officers of the state by signing marriage licenses. Whatever courses of action are deemed necessary, the coming years will require careful discernment. All Christians and men and women of good will must work to rebuild the culture of marriage and live lives that attest to the joy and beauty of marriage. On this basis alone can we succeed.

Yea, verily. Marriage, man and woman united together under God and Jesus. Hopefully all of us who accept Jesus as the source of our salvation can agree to this post.
Everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matt. 5:28).
The author, like so many other people, takes this far too literally.
Why would God make women beautiful?
So we could so control ourselves as to night find them attractive?
To find them amazingly beautiful?
To be driven crazy by their allure?
Don’t get me wrong, good looks gives you a five minute headstart over everyone else. After that, you gotta deliver the goods of conversation, humor, shared interests and at least some pretense of interest in the other person, beyond objectification.
Caveat: Those rules don’t apply between 930pm and midnight, on a beautiful vacation or at any ski resort in the world.
The author uses that verse to make the point that sex affects our souls and not just our bodies. The author is correct.
Like the Israelites of old, Americans have by and large rejected God to follow their own devices.
And now we want to be spared the consequences?
We might want to look at Elijah, who asked God to bring a devastating drought on that wicked nation. And then preach the gospel to bring this nation to their knees before their rightful Lord.
Not how I ever interpret that when someone uses it.
Their version always makes it seem as if we are called to be some sort of eunuch and I don’t believe that, at all.
If only that were the worst of it.
The author apparently missed the throuple.
And, of course, the polygamists.
Too literally ?
It says what it means.
It’s right from the mouth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Are you asking why there is temptation in the world ?
If there was no temptation to sin, we would not need the Holy Spirit to help us overcome temptation to sin.
It would be easy to live a sinless life.
But that is what the author says he means in that very same paragraph.
**The Two Shall Become One Flesh: Reclaiming Marriage by Evangelicals and Catholics Together**
Amen!
That verse suggests that even being tempted is sinful.
So he does.
Psalm 133: 1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; 3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
Well, I’m a complete failure in that regard but, the use if the scripture is one of controlling one’s thoughts and I find it difficult to believe God wouldn’t want us to be attracted to each other
The terms of self temperance and moderated are use in absolute terms and I can’t see hiw that is possible.
No man is going to live each moment like that. It isn’t possible.
It is possible not to act on those thoughts but, that’s as far as I can get...
So a woman’s beauty means what then, temporally?
You mean like “Thou Shall not Kill”?
That’s a commandment but, it has extenuations.
