Apologists Concerned About Rick Warren's Alignment With 'Holy Father'
Charisma News ^ | 12/3/14 | Mark Andrews

"Christian unity" is one of those terms that stir up a whole spectrum of—sometimes emotional—opinions.

On the one hand, we know that Jesus prayed to the Father concerning future believers "that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you" (John 17:21a, NIV).

On the other hand, charismatics know it is almost pointless to discuss the gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12, 14) with Baptists or most anyone else from a mainline denomination. And Protestants of just about any stripe get riled up when they hear Catholics talking about papal infallibility or their adoration of the Virgin Mary.

It's on this latter point that Rick Warren, senior pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, and successful author, has waded into a hornet's nest of controversy by telling a Catholic News Service interviewer that Protestants and Catholics "have far more in common than what divides us" and that Catholics do not "worship Mary like she's another god."

Regarding Warren's view that Catholics do not worship Mary, Matt Slick, writing on the website of the Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry, goes into great detail with material from Roman Catholic sources that say Mary is "the all holy one," is to be prayed to, worshipped, that she "brings us the gifts of eternal life" and she "made atonement for the sins of man."

If that's not putting her in the place of Christ as a god-like figure to be worshipped, then what is it?

"We believe in Trinity, the Bible, the resurrection, and that salvation is through Jesus Christ. These are the big issues," Warren says. "But the most important thing is if you love Jesus, we're on the same team."

To Warren's point about being on the same team, Slick.....

>>The fact that ANYONE could even conceive of something so bizarre reveals a lot about what is going on in his head and what is motivating him.<<

A sad, sad commentary.

You can cut and paste without attribution to the anti-Catholic site you got it from (CARM.org).

You can IGNORE the CATHOLIC teaching, found it that post, with the best of them!

The same Luther who thought Mary was always a virgin and didn’t mind calling her ‘mother of God’?

See how that Catholic teaching POISONED his mind!!

Ex cathedra for US, but not for Thee; eh Vlad?

So you agree that Catholics can obey their faith and go to heaven.

Sure, they can obey their faith and get to heaven, but that is in spite of them obeying their faith, not because of it.

So God is the second person of the Trinity.

What about the rest of the Trinity?

Are they not God then?

“Nope, you said Jesus, God.”

Of course. Just like if I said, “Syncro, anti-Catholic”. That’s not two different people. It’s one and the same person.

“God the Father or God the Holy Spirit?”

God the Son, Jesus. See how I used the comma there to separate two references to the same Person?

“So you are kicking The Holy Spirit out of what is commonly called the 3-in-one, or Trinity?”

Nope. You seem to be going to great lengths to create straw men. Why?

“God is NEVER existent without being all three.”

The Three Divine Persons have different roles. Only ONE was born as a man.

“That’s going to look bad on your resume when St. Peter reads it at the Pearly Gates.”

Nope. I made no mistake about the Trinity whatsoever. Everything I said was 100% correct about the Trinity. Mary gave birth to Jesus, Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus Emmanuel, God, Son of God. That’s five references all to the same Person separated by commas. See how that works?

I cannot find the phrase "personal Saviour" anywhere in the scriptures.

You chose to ignore my post 1285 which was posted directly to you and which would lead you out of any confusion regarding this phrase "personal Savior."

Okay then, same logic as yours:

I cannot find the phrase "Roman Catholic" anywhere in the scriptures.

Your description very much fits the holy catholic apostolic church at the time of the Jewish Apostles

What, with time travel?

The Catholic Church wasn't invented until about the third century.

Then they started re writing history, making retroactive "popes" and now claiming that Catholics existed from the beginning of Christianity.

Proven over and over again here on the RF at FR.

The post from metmom that you replied to:

Catholicism is such a religion of control freaks. If people don’t do it their way, they stand condemned. And who are you to make demands on someone else and who are you that you seem to feel that people are answerable to you? Neither you nor your church have any claims of authority on ANYONE outside of it.

“You can IGNORE the CATHOLIC teaching, found it that post, with the best of them!”

It’s not about ignoring it. It’s about the fact that it’s just yet another cut and paste of what has been explained countless times in threads on FR.

You reveal you are not called of God the Father...but read the Gospel of John anyway, maybe the Holy Spirit will be able to get it through your stubborn heart that:

YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN by PERSONALLY ACCEPTING and BELIEVING in CHRIST as your Savior.

God can’t and won’t do it for you. Neither can the will of any man cause yo u tobe saved. (John 1:13)

“See how that Catholic teaching POISONED his mind!!”

No, the poison was his own invention - Protestantism.

“Ex cathedra for US, but not for Thee; eh Vlad?”

No, truth for us and heresy for thee (by your own choice).

Of course. Just like if I said, “Syncro, anti-Catholic”.

Which of course you cannot say as I am not anti Catholic.

Ok then, as if I said you don't accept the Holy Spirit as part of the Godhead. Hmmmm, possibility...

I've never seen anyone try so hard to pry the Holy Spirit away from the Son and the Father.

Apparently, even ones own credibility is a “reasonable” sacrifice for defending Mother Mary. ;o)

>>And Jesus is ONE in Himself even though He has two natures (divine and human)<<

So Jesus got is divine nature from Mary?

>>God is three Divine Persons, but but only one Godhead.<<

In the Dogma of the Trinity the Catholic Church says this.

"There is therefore nothing created, nothing subject to another in the Trinity"

If Jesus was not fully human but indeed God and therefore Mary the mother of God. Who did Jesus pray to as superior?

These groups are wrong on their position as it contradicts the Word. No Christian denies that.

They do. After all, they're co-religionists who proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior who have studied the scriptures and find no outright prohibition against abortion. It's irrelevant whether you or anyone else thinks they are wrong. Either way Protestantism has already subjected itself to the rule of majority. It was implicit from the beginning. And because Protestantism disregarded Truth for individual convenience, well, as the culture goes so goes Protestantism.

Much as catholics are wrong on the immaculate conception as it too contradicts the Word as all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

It is the protestant that is wrong. On so many counts. The mere existence of Protestantism is a contradiction. A division within the Body of Christ that was not intended. A purely man-made device to achieve whatever its beholders desire.

All of this illustrates what happens when you fall away from the Word. Reading it will keep you on track and in a right relationship with God.

Apparently not. Not when there are those who, through their reading, find(or don't find) what they want in it. Such as a scriptural prohibition against abortion, homosexual sodomy, contraception.
