Uh-oh! Are you named something weird, like "Trig" or "Bristol"? You might go to Hell! Or at least, get in trouble with the Pope. He told some people that Catholics should have Christian names, and Italians flipped out.
According to Reuters, the Italian press freaked at this:
The pope... said... that every new member of the faith acquires the character of a son or daughter of the Church "starting from a Christian name.""Give Your Children Christian Names," the papers read the next day, though, presumably in Italian ("Give-a You Children The Christian-a Names-a Spaghetti!"). They even provided lists of names! And since we aspire to be just as service-y as Italian editors, here's a list of names you should not give your children, if you want to go to Heaven:This, he said, was "an unequivocal sign that the Holy Spirit gives a rebirth to people in the womb of the Church."

Not sure how “Cruz” made the “non-Christian” list...it’s Spanish for “Cross.”
Incredible how ignorant the God-hating sodomites at Gawker are. Have they no idea that “Barack/Barak” comes from the Book of Judges? Deborah had to tell him to get his ass in gear, and he still wouldn’t go unless she went.
I know they had to hit the Palins, but Trig is Welsh for “abiding.” There is no more Christian concept than “abiding.” The Lord of Hosts is ever abiding.
That may be so, but the Governor has said that they chose it based on its Norse meaning of “brave victory” or something like that. I believe Todd has some Norwegian in his background and that’s where it came from. Who knows? They do have some unique names, particularly for the boys. John Palin probably would have been easier.
In any event I wonder if the NYT or Dem leaders will be calling on Gawker to tone down the vitriol, to be more civil.

Sometime in the seventies that all changed, when the new mamas apparently decided that they wanted "distinctive" names for their brood. Where did they go for "distinctive"? The media, of course. Suddenly the kindergartens were filled with little boys named "Jason" and little girls named "Heather"; often three of each in any group of 30. And so it continues to this day.
Of course, it could be worse. One little girl that was born at the same hospital as my firstborn got the name "Placenta". I never saw her, but I hope that didn't mean she was so ugly that they brought the wrong "part" home by mistake.
I remember from my western civ. class that “Barbara” was a name invented in Roman times because it came from “barbarian”. The Romans thought that the invading tribes from the north sounded like they were speaking lot of nonsense sounds— bar-bar-bar-bar. So naming a kid Barbara was like naming her a cutesy baby-talk word like “goo-goo” or koochi-koochi. It would be just the type of name that would irritate Pope Benedict.
Ironic, isn’t it, that St. Barbara, whose name came from gibberish, apparently became a Catholic Saint without being named after one?
No, not sure what pagans creating a name for slaves has to do with Catholic parents naming their Children. I think you should probably read what the pope actually said. Pretty sure you wouldn't name your kid "Smellylittlemoron" or Smelly for short and there's probably a reason for it, names mean things and can either help you aspire or hide.

I think that was part of the author’s attempt at humor. One should not expect much knowledge from the left.
This is something I've wondered about for a long time. If we give our kids only saints names, there will never be any new saints names.
Nope. Although Sarah does come from a Catholic mother, so she should know better ;^)
Yes, many great Christian Saints had “barbarian” names. I myself am named for one of the first Olympians, no Saints by that name..... yet.
