D'oh! The producer for television show "The Simpsons" had a holy cow after learning that the Vatican considered Homer Simpson a Catholic.
Executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly on Monday he was in "shock and awe" when he heard the assertion, saying, "I guess it makes up for me not going to church for 20 years."
The headline in the semi-official Vatican newspaper, the Osservatore Romano, recently read: Homer And Bart Are Catholic, and backed it up by arguing the family prays before meals and that the show explores issues such as family, community, education and religion in a way that few other popular television programs do.
Father Francesco Occhetta, writing in La Civilta Cattolica, said the series is not without its dangers, but that if the show is taken with a grain of salt, parents should not be afraid to let their children watch it.
The Simpsons remains one of the few TV programs for kids in which Christian faith, religion, and the question about God are recurring themes, Occhetta wrote.
But Jean told Entertainment Weekly the Vatican's analysis was a stretch.
"We've pretty clearly shown that Homer is not Catholic. I really don't think he could go without eating meat on Fridays -- for even an hour."
He also said the Simpson family attends the First Church of Springfield "which is decidedly Presbylutheran," and pointed out that Homer and Bart only considered converting in the 2005 episode.

The Pope probably assumed Homer “mmmm beer” Simpson was Irish Catholic.
The Pope has nothing to do with this. The leftstream media wants you to gullibly think that L’Osservatore Romano speaks for the Pontiff. It doesn’t. This is just the latest example of why Giovanni Maria Vian should be terminated.
No way. When have the Simpsons ever shown any guilt?
At least this article calls the paper “semi official”.

Homer quotes:
As he's walking into church (in the Simpsons' movie) "Relax, those pious morons are too busy talking to their phony-baloney god."
You are much more informed on this than I. But I was just making an Irish drinking joke, TGIF.
RE: As he’s walking into church (in the Simpsons’ movie) “Relax, those pious morons are too busy talking to their phony-baloney god.”
I saw one episode where Homer actually repented and had the chance to speak to God.
Homer: “Lord, can you tell me what the meaning of life is?”
God: “You’ll know it all when you die”
Homer: “Aww, ‘cmon, why can’t I know now?”
God : “You can’t even wait six months?”
One of the funniest Simpsons episodes ever was when Bart and Homer started going to a Catholic Church.
Another Homer quote (when he is stuck on a plane with missionaries to a remote land):
“I don’t even believe in Jeebus!”
Didn’t Homer and Bart convert to Catholicism in one episode? In this episode Marge was annoyed that Heaven was boring and she demaned to speak to Jesus. Meanwhile Jesus was over in “Catholic Heaven” having the time of his life with all the great Italian food and wine, Mexican dancing and pinatas, etc.
Homer IS different than the deceiver in chief. Homer is NOT a Unitarian.
“Well, not the Unitarians. If that’s the one true faith, I’ll eat my hat”
Ak: “If the Lord is all-powerful, why does He care...”

GG: Whos Jesus to you?
OBAMA: Right. Jesus is a historical figure for me, and hes also a bridge between God and man, in the Christian faith, and one that I think is powerful precisely because he serves as that means of us reaching something higher. And hes also a wonderful teacher. I think its important for all of us, of whatever faith, to have teachers in the flesh and also teachers in history.
GG: The conversation stopper, when you say youre a Christian and leave it at that.
OBAMA: Where do you move forward with that? This is something that Im sure Id have serious debates with my fellow Christians about. I think that the difficult thing about any religion, including Christianity, is that at some level there is a call to evangelize and prostelytize. Theres the belief, certainly in some quarters, that people havent embraced Jesus Christ as their personal savior that they’re going to hell.
GG: You dont believe that?
OBAMA: I find it hard to believe that my God would consign four-fifths of the world to hell. I cant imagine that my God would allow some little Hindu kid in India who never interacts with the Christian faith to somehow burn for all eternity. Thats just not part of my religious makeup.
Jean doesn't seem to know that the no-meat-on-Fridays rule was relaxed decades ago (now it's only for Fridays in Lent).
That reminds me of the joke (from when the rule was still in effect) about the missionary who was trying to convert a tribe of cannibals. When someone came to visit and asked him if he had persuaded them to stop eating people, he said, "No, but now they only eat fishermen on Fridays."
Homer and Bart are dumb enough to be CINOs.
How DARE you insult Homer in that fashion.
Exactly! Failing that he should at least be fired.
heh.
