Great news
What Does the Prayer Really Say ^ | October 25, 2006 | Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

Great news CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULUM — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 11:00 am

Folks, I received very good news today. Three sources confirmed something for me of great importance and a matter of consolation. At the moment, it is best not to publish it or talk too much about it, until it is brought to light by the proper authority.

Nevertheless, I would kindly ask readers of WDTPRS in print and in this blog general to say in advance a prayer of thanksgiving to God. Whenever we have petitions, it is good to add a prayer of thanks together with the petition.

So, I ask you kindly to say a prayer of thanks for something in particular, even if you don’t know yet what it is. I am really not trying to be cageywith this. Sometimes people who run blogs or write article rush to publicize soemthing before its times and, in doing so, create unnecessary complications. Just say a prayer of praise to God, for this and other blessings in your lives.

We praise Thee, O God: we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship Thee: the Father everlasting.

To Thee all Angels cry aloud: the heavens and all the powers therein. To Thee Cherubin and Seraphin: continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy: Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty: of Thy glory.

The glorious company of the Apostles: praise Thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets: praise Thee. The noble army of Martyrs: praise Thee.

The holy Church throughout all the world: doth acknowledge Thee; The Father: of an infinite majesty; Thine honourable, true: and only Son; Also the Holy Ghost: the Comforter.

Thou art the King of glory: O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son: of the Father.

When thou tookest upon Thee to deliver man Thou didst not abhor the Virgin’s womb.

When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death: Thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

Thou sittest at the right hand of God: in the glory of the Father.

We believe that Thou shalt come: to be our Judge.

We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants: whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood.

Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints: in glory everlasting.

O Lord, save Thy people: and bless Thine heritage. Govern them: and lift them up for ever.

Day by day: we magnify Thee; And we worship Thy Name: ever world without end.

Vouchsafe, O Lord: to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us: have mercy upon us.

O Lord, let Thy mercy lighten upon us: as our trust is in Thee. O Lord, in Thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded.

He translated the Te Deum which is recited on major feasts. It is in the Magnificat magazine all the time. If he has three pieces of good news and is in Rome, it must be "hugh."

Check the comments! All masses in St. Peter's will now be in Latin and not Italian! Those would be the "Pauline" masses for now, but still! Even got folks dusting off old Latin missals!

Of what nature is the news, in your opinion? Is it related to the Church, a world issue, a personal request? I am not familiar with Fr. John but prayed along with you all.

Fr. Z. has begged for the term "pro multis" to be translated into "the many" and not "for all." However, I think it goes beyond that. One way of NOT translating pro multis is to have the priest recite it AS "pro multis." I take this to mean the motu proprio by Pope Benedict on the Tridentine Mass has been signed and will be released soon. The French episcopate was reported to be in an uproar yesterday.

French clerics oppose restoration of Latin Mass

Oct. 24 (CWNews.com) - French clerics are leading the opposition to release of a papal document that would allow wider use of the traditional Latin Mass.

A group of 35 French bishops and priests have issued a statement urging Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) not to issue the motu proprio that has been widely discussed in recent weeks. The clerics predict that by allowing broader use of the Tridentine rite, the papal document would "plunge us back into the liturgical life of another age."

Infocatholo, the news agency sponsored by the French bishops' conference, reports that the papal document has been edited and is ready for release. But the bishops' news agency says that there is strong opposition to the proposed move within the Roman Curia.

The opposition is particularly evident among French bishops, many of whom have given clear public indications of their hostility toward the papal initiative. Bishop Robert Le Gall of Toulouse told the daily La Croix that permission to use the Latin Mass would "create grave difficulties, especially for those who have remained loyal to Vatican II." Sounding the same theme, Bishop Andre Lacrampe of Besançon said that "one cannot erase Vatican II with a stroke of the pen."

Opponents of the Latin Mass have based their arguments on the premise that the Pope's proposal would be designed to encourage members of the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) to return to communion with the Holy See. Bishop Claude Dagens of Angouleme told the weekly La Vie that a change in liturgical discipline would not achieve that result. He explained, "You can't pretend that Archbishop Lefebvre's break with the Church was caused only by the liturgy."

But other French bishops objected to use of the old liturgical rite by priests who have left the SSPX, to set up the new Institute of the Good Shepherd. Archbishop Andre Vingt-Trois of Paris complained that the new Institute, with Vatican approval, has already begun work in the Paris archdiocese. And Bishop Michel Pansard of Chartres said that he was "astonished" to learn that the traditionalist group was opening a seminary without first consulting him.

Infocatho, the bishops' new agency, gave a clear indication of its own perspective in the news report on the French clerics' complaints. The adoption of a policy allowing free use of either the Tridentine liturgy or the post-conciliar Novus Ordo, Infocatho said, would divide the Church, because "Eucharistic bi-ritualism in the Latin Catholic Church contradicts what the Eucharist signifies."

Limit role of extraordinary ministers, Vatican tells US

Oct. 25 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican has instructed the Catholic bishops of the US to discontinue the practice of allowing extraordinary Eucharistic ministers to assist with the purification of chalices after Communion.

In an October 12 letter to Bishop William Skylstad, the president of the US bishops' conference, the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship reported that Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) ordered an end to the American practice. Cardinal Francis Arinze (bio - news) was responding to a request from the US bishops' conference, asking for approval to continue the policy.

Bishop Skylstad, in turn, wrote to all American bishops on October 23, informing them that "it will be necessary to inform all pastors that extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion may no longer assist with the purification of sacred vessels at Mass."

Although the General Instruction of the Roman Missal specifies that sacred vessels may be purified only by a priest or deacon, the American bishops had obtained an indult, or permission, to allow extraordinary ministers to assist in that role. This indult was intended to encourage more people to receive Communion under both kinds.

In his letter to Bishop Skylstad, Cardinal Arinze noted, "Sometimes, however, the high number of communicants may render it inadvisable for everyone to drink from the chalice." He recommended that the American bishops remind their people of the teaching from the Council of Trent, "that Christ is fully present under each of the species. Communion under the species of bread alone, as a consequence, makes it possible to receive all the fruit of Eucharistic grace."

Bishop Skylstad, in conveying news of the Vatican decision to the American hierarchy, attached a list of questions and answers about the distribution of Communion, prepared by Bishop Donald Trautman, the chairman of the US bishops' liturgy committee. Bishop Trautman reminded his fellow bishops that the use of extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist is intended "exclusively for those instances where there are not enough ordinary ministers to distribute Holy Communion."

This is not true, is it?
Really, don't do that to my heart. I would love a TLM at my parish.

Isn't this "Te Deum" from the Book of Common Prayer glorious? I love this version.

I thought it said, "and bless thine inheritance."

. . . pause while I check the old BCP . . .

I went all the way back to the 1662 Book, and it's "heritage." The "new" book severely truncates the Te Deum and that part is omitted. Don't know how "inheritance" got into my memory banks.
