Secularism, Symbolism and the Catacombs

Posted on 01/06/2005 1:21:05 AM PST by JFK_Lib

I read more and more of Christian symbols being censored from the public square in the most absurd ways, and then the courts uphold it.

The SCOTUS bans opening prayers at *high*school*football*games while it opens each session with a public prayer themselves. SCOTUS also bans the display of the Ten Commandments while it has its own display at the SCOTUS building.

This antipathy for the Cross and overt symbols of Christianity herald the final emergence of the Baby Boom generation elite's hatred of Christianity indoctrinated in them during the counter-culture phase of the late 1960's and now that they are assuming positions of power throughout the nation, Christians are going to get rolled back as much as these gray-haired pagans can.

So, other than expensive court fights, what can Christians do to fight this trend?

Well, if we look back into history, we see that Christians used symbols for their faith that had no overt meaning, but meaning that was significant to them, like the fish.

When I read the news that the Columbine school district had on several cases banned the display of crosses on school property, tile memorials and even nearby private property, I thought that the parents could have used substitute symbology similar to the fish to still get their point across (and maybe they did).

Other than the fish, the rising morning sun has long been a symbol of Christ's resurrection.

The Joshua Tree is symbolic of the Cross, Joshua = Yeshua, and cross = tree.

Stylized crosses, like the Celtic cross can often be worked into designs that are not immediately recognisable.

The North Star is often thought of as symbolic of the Divine Word which guides us through life. Stylized with eight points, it can also represent the Cross and was used to such effect during the Roman persecutions. The Epiphany Star is a five pointed version that represents Christ as well.

Red roses can symbolize the blood of Christ. “The desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose”. (Isaiah 35:1)

Streams flowing into pools of water with people standing in them can symbolize baptism.

Cornerstones are also sometimes used to represent Christ, the cornerstone the builders rejected. The lion rampant or any Messianic image from the Bible can be used also.

Three inter-locking circles can represent the trinity as can almost anything with three elements, such as the upright triangle.

These are just a few symbols that can be used as substitutes when the secularists persecute the Christian faith. Chrismons are common and not too ahrd to find - http://www.paperchrismons.com/paintme.htm

We can still get our message out though the secularists rage, much as the church did 1700 years ago.

The anchor cross is also a good one. Unfortunately, the fish symbol is to well known.

The cup and wafer, or bread and wine, was also used to symbolize communion.

Yes, those work too, thanks.

I think that Christians, when confronted with such secular bigotry and have their symbols rejected, should respond with displaying these types of lesser known symbols that the secular opposition cannot assert is inherently Christian, and we know the meaning when we see it.

There are many ways to skin a cat, I guess, no?
