Let's be honest. The battle over so-called "gay rights" is over. Politicians, the media, and the medical and psychological professions - everyone is completely on board. It's simply a matter of time -weeks, months, but not more than a few years-- before homosexual "marriage" and child adoption are made completely legal.
New York Republican Governor George Pataki has pushed his state senate to pass gay rights legislation in December. Interested commentators believe this will help the governor with the now-important homosexual vote in the election next month. And, after all, votes are what it's all about. Not principle. Not right and wrong. Most politicians will mortgage their mothers if it means votes to keep them in office.
Gone are the days when one could have a real debate over issues and policies. It's all about getting votes. Issues of what's right and what's wrong, and what constitutes moral and immoral, no longer matter.
When Republicans - the "family values" party - start signing off on this stuff, you know the war is officially over.
However, the battle for the hearts and souls of troubled homosexuals is not over. Many are still being converted. But the hard core gay rights activists have won.
Now it's on to the next depravity.
I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
It will always be a weak, shaky, unsteady victory--and the gay lobby knows it. They will never know more than partial, grudging acceptance from most Americans. And there will be resolute and even fierce resistence from others.
It's due to their absence that folks feel motivated to pass these special legislative packages for them - something that doesn't really affect anyone really doesn't count.
It is time to reverse that. The fight is not over. Many people who are not gay and dont want the undermining of the family see this particular issue as a civil rights issue. If they are wrong, you have to prove them wrong, on the field of ideas. You cant curl up in a ball, you have to explain why you are right and they are wrong.
Yet we desperately need those appointments, and aren't going to get them if social conservatives once again stay home and pout. So all the more ironic and sad that right before the election Cal comes out with a column that could depress GOP turnout.
I agree. Let's not be a quitter. Heck, if you are in New York, send a sharp note to Patacki and let him know how you feel. Patacki just is oding this because the 'northeast GOP' strategy is to stick to the moderate social positions to avoid getting 'tagged' as 'extremists' by the liberals and the press.
The same could be said for abortion, yet support for it is dropping.
If it comes down to a choice between the fundamental institutions of a social order and Governor Pataki, isn't one's course obvious? If New York Republicans do not have a horse in the race, isn't it better not to cast a vote than a vote for a spineless Yahoo?
No, as an Ohioan, it is not my call what people do in New York. But I know what I would do under these conditions.

On the other hand, just look at the media any time some kid is abducted. Just look at the media any time some kid falls into a well and gets stuck. Just look at the fuss people make over kids, how much money they spend on them, etc., etc.
Most people care about kids. Especially their own kids, but there is still kind of a generalized caring for kids among most of the population, even among the childless and empty-nesters. This is rooted deep in the human psyche, probably is even instinctual. Neither the media nor the education system can really erase it.
So here's the thing: we really need to couch everything in terms of being "for the children." I know, that's Hillary's phrase. We never should have let her steal it, she has absolutely no right to it. We need to reclaim it as our own.
We are not going to be able to make much progress against "gay rights" in general. But when we focus on protecting children from pedophiles, most people do sit up and take notice, and the vast majority still responds positively to positive action to protect children from such abuse.
Similarly, as long and the abortion debate is defined about who can or cannot control women's bodies, we will never make much progress. When we started talking about protecting children, especially children that were already as good as born, then we started getting a much more sympathetic ear.
The Democrats say that they they are about protecting the children, but that is a load of crap. Everything they have ever done has caused children nothing but harm. They ALWAYS do more harm than good, no matter how well-intentioned and nice-sounding their rhetoric may be. If we are going to win, we had better put together a program that both sounds better and actually does work better where the protection of children are concerned.
