Four men soon approached the Corolla in a silver SUV at about 4:40 a.m., brandishing firearms at Sims and her coworker and demanding they exit the vehicle, CBS News reported.
"I started screaming my coworker’s name out," Jaquita Sims told the Chicago Sun-Times.
A gun fight ensued as the 65-year-old, legally armed coworker pulled out his own gun and used the only five bullets he had to defend himself and Sims, the outlet reported.
"They wanted to carjack them," Janice Sims said. "They just shot the car up maybe 20 times."
The suspects fled, and the 65-year-old drove himself and Sims to a local hospital. Sims suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, while the 65-year-old was grazed by a bullet on his thigh.

Left unsaid, what Jaquita Sims and her 65 y/o co-worker were doing out and about in downtown Chicago at 4;30 in the morning? Yes, it’s legal, but is it wise?
Good that he had the presence of mind (and the lead) to wage battle with the lowlifes.
Jaquita & ‘Mister Jones’ may want to reschedule their weekly late dinner rendezvous.
It’s also a shame he was such a poor shot.
I was hoping to hear a 5-0, not a 0-5.
From the article: “Early Wednesday morning last week, Jaquita Sims’s car suffered a flat tire as she made her way to O’Hare International Airport amid holiday travel, her mother told the outlet. Her coworker, identified only as a 65-year-old man, offered to give her a lift and picked her up on Chicago’s West Side in his Toyota Corolla.”
Implied is that they work at the airport.
Ok. Thanks. That makes a little more sense now.
Boy, didn’t she have a full day!
Honestly is it worth it? One Corolla and 5 bullets vs an SUV with 4 armed men... sometimes you just gotta give it up. It’s not worth a bullet to the chest.
Maybe their shift started at 5?
Who needs 30 rounds?
I will disagree
If you get out of the car you have no idea what the thugs will do next.
Will they just take the car or will they take every thing you have and beat the crap out of you just for fun.
Will they force you in to their SUV and take you somewhere rape you and then kill you.
Once you are out of the car you are totally at their mercy.
Better to fight on your feet than die on your knees to paraphrase Emiliano Zappata.
Even if they gave up the car, I wouldn't doubt they would've been shot anyway, especially if they are white.
I hope the victim who was shot in the chest recovers.

I think it confirms that an AR-15 plus 15 & 30 round magazines are a must.
Now that is funny I don't care who you are!
Through a squinty face the commuter asked—
“Did he fire six shots or only five?” Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is a . 44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you’ve gotta ask yourself one question: “Do I feel lucky?” Well, do ya, punk?”
“ It’s too bad that he only had 5 bullets.”
I’ve recently changed from a single stack .45 that holds 6 rounds to the double stack .45 version that holds 15 for EDC here. The natives are getting restless.
Love my Springfield pistols.

It’s embarrassing to get killed for lack of shooting back.

Yep....but sometimes 5 is enough....if they’re 357 hollow points. I gave my wife a Lady Smith revolver (5 shot 357) and made her take a class and shoot/train with it.
No, if you give in you are just as likely to be shot. The perps are jacked up on adrenaline, and the drugs they used all night. Only one way to address violence.
” especially if they are white.”
Chicago Airport workers!
It sounds like a film from late 70’s starring Pam Grier and Jim Brown.
