I think even my neighbors could tell the difference between a signature - and no signature.
Perhaps good enough. I participated as an online volunteer in a True The Vote signature verification of Wisconsin votes. I’m pretty sure that the signatures we flagged as questionable were then reviewed by professionals.
Republicans had a chance to push for photo ID laws for years since it has 80% support across the board. Now it’s “political” and it’s too late to fix the problem.
My “official” signature hasn’t changed at all over the past few decades. I can look at documents I signed 40 years ago and my signature is pretty much the same. What I’m concerned about is when a absentee voting request signature shows the signing of “Joe Blow” in legible writing and then the actual ballot shows a unreadable squiggle or slash.
I would think most eligible voters use their “bank document” signature when signing their name on absentee ballots. When squiggly lines or slashes look so similar to the same squiggle of other absentee voter’s signature, I become concerned.
Agree that signatures are rapidly becoming obsolete, as anyone who has ever used his finger to “sign” something on a touchscreen knows. A thumbprint, applied in the presence of a reliable witness, would be much better, but that’s not going to happen, because racism or something.
The only way you affirm that you are a US citizen in order to legally vote in Washington state is a signature on your ballot affirming you are indeed citizen.
No other “proof” is needed, even at the time you register to vote (automatically when you get a photo driver’s license by the way).
What could go wrong?
My absentee vote for Trump in 2016 was rejected because my signatures “didnt match”.
I’ve since changed my registration so an absentee ballot isn’t needed.
Been on the Sig Ver committee for 10 yrs
Had to give a thumb print for drivers license.
In Arizona the signature verification is worthless. Kari Lake sued to see if these signatures matched with the one on record . A corrupt pin head judge recently denied her request.
I remember when Federal checks included the instructions to sign signature or make your mark with pen or indelible pencil.
