Some decisions are so negligent and with consequences so predictably disastrous that only a Big Stupid Government could ever make them. Over the weekend, a massive fire under I-10 at E. 14th Ave. in Los Angeles was severe enough to cause structural damage bad enough to close that section of the freeway "indefinitely."
The miracle — thanks to Big Stupid Government — is that it didn't happen sooner.
With more than 300,000 vehicles being rerouted each and every day until further notice, frustrated Los Angelenos demanded answers — and, on Tuesday, they got one.
"Bad actors" caused the fire, according to State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant.
Some unknown arsonist is believed to have started Saturday's blaze, but that's not the "bad actor" to whom Berlant was referring. You see, the city government leases underpass space to people and companies for storage. In this case, "bad actors" filled the underpass with wooden pallets and containers of alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
In my report on Monday (and at the top of this story), you can see the pallets stacked so high under the freeway that they're almost touching the underside of the elevated road. The photos were courtesy of Google Street View, so it isn't like the towers of literal kindling were some dark secret.
The city is currently in a legal battle with a company called Airspace that leased the underpass storage area.
Let us pause here to consider the ill-considered wonder of stuffing underpasses full of kindling and flammable goo. Let us pause again to consider the bone-crushing stupidity of allowing unpoliced homeless encampments filled with vagrants, addicts, and the mentally ill to cohabitate with pallets and accelerants.
"Giving money and power to government," P.J. O'Rourke quipped, "is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys."

My son told me several days ago that you could buy wooden pallets from people who stored them at that location.
He also said that the bums probably started the fire.
I guess he was right.
Storing wooden pallets under a major overpass is almost as good an idea as using airports to shelter illegal aliens.
From what I understand the pallet co was leasing the land from Caltrans...who like most other state hwy agencies..owns the land under the freeway.
THE HOMELESS will succeed in burning LOS Angeles to a stand still by New Year.
I followed your instructions on the maps and street view. What a disgusting hell hole. CA is third world trash.
“Newsom will do to America what he’s done to California.”
The spineless, progressive California refugees will do it to the rest of America.
A few months ago I watched some of the earliest episodes of Perry Mason. It was amazing to see how LA looked then, and also the very normal integration between Anglos and Latinos.
There is ‘tarded; then there is Dimtarded.
The Homeless Industrial Complex...
Not too many years ago I was in a commercial establishment in the LA area. All I heard were people speaking in foreign languages. I recall thinking when I was a kid, everyone spoke English. Everyone was civil and most were united.
A few years later I find everything was being printed in dozens of languages. All at a cost to the tax payers...Another decade and I was told the state was now a sanctuary for criminals, people who entered our country illegally. Those in government then decided we need to give them tax paid prizes, gifts, low interest loans...
Then they made what they call hate crimes to protect the millions of criminal alien's and foreign nationals they were forcing upon the state. They made citizenship pointless. That's when I realized, this was one big attack/conspiracy directed at legitimate law abiding Americans citizens. And every year it got worse, never improving for the actual citizens. Just the opposite.
These are not simply "Liberals" behind all this, it's hard core Communist, America haters, people that wanted Americans on their knees...
For years I tired to fight it anyway possible, voting, signing petitions, going to rallies.....The government laughed at us. It was useless, too far gone....Outnumbered...Those running the state were no longer your allies, but your enemy who sided with tens of millions of those they intentionally forced on us, allowing millions to flood in unabated....About 8 years ago, I came to the realization there was no hope. So many they choked off the social services meant for legitimate citizens...The schools, jobs, jails, hospitals were all overrun. It was unsalvageable...Way too far out of control to ever change...
I don't give up easy, but reaching that point, I knew it was time to go.
As I said a few day ago. This could not happen without a major fuel source. Now we know how. The stupidity of liberals running the state is worse than I could have imagined. It may even be too stupid to not have been done on purpose.
“All I heard were people speaking in foreign languages. I recall thinking when I was a kid, everyone spoke English”
...And you haven’t been to Florida or Massachusetts?
I was one of those in CA who told the rest of the country what was coming in the late 70s, early 80s. You all thought it was somehow cute and funny when it was isolated to CA...Fast forward a few decades and now it’s in all your backyards....
Any other questions?
Guaranteed that sanitizer was from Federal money. I know a school that can’t get rid of hundreds of boxes of sanitizer and cleaning supplies that were shipped to it during the WuFlu panic without notice or request.
60?
Try 40!
It was still nice enough, back then, to host the Olympics.
Someplace I still have a custom CA novelty license plate imprinted with “LA GAMES”
Not quite. Watts riots, August of ‘65 changed a lot of things, all for the bad.
I lived out in Anaheim and things seemed to chill out for a long while after that. I was in and around downtown L.A. off and on into the late 1980’s and it was all just South Central and the Rampart that we heard to stay away from. Hell, I went and had a 9pm dinner at The Pantry on 9th and Figueroa one night, and none of the guys on the street corners even looked at me twice.
Biggest thing I remember in L.A. after Watts was the stupid forced bussing they did with the school kids. That idiotic move was in the headlines constantly for years in the ‘70’s.
Btw, LA was going southbound long before the 84 Olympics. That’s where a member of LAPD planted a fake bomb on one of the busses used to transport those associated the games. He then “found” it in an effort to be the big hero.
That must be so sad for you. I live far away from CA but still think maybe I should emigrate for my children’s sake... just can’t figure out where to go 😔
