A plane crash in Utah Sunday evening left four people dead, including a state senator from North Dakota, his wife and their two young children, a state official said Monday.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Department said the single-engine Piper plane carrying state Senator Doug Larsen, 47, and his family crashed Sunday evening about 15 miles north of the town of Moab, shortly after it refueled at the Canyonlands Airfield. The sheriff's office said the senator was the pilot and all four people on board the plane were killed.

"Senator Doug Larsen, his wife Amy, and their two young children died in a plane crash last evening in Utah," Republican Senate Majority Leader David Hogue wrote in an email to his fellow senators, obtained by The Associated Press. "They were visiting family in Scottsdale and returning home. They stopped to refuel in Utah."

I’ve been on lots of tiny planes, mid-size, etc. Often not because I wanted to be... even with superb pilots.

weekend warrior pilots, single engines, mountains, etc... recipe for disaster.

"Larsen talked in the Senate chamber with fellow senators for roughly an hour about flying planes and working on his private pilot's license."

What?

FWIW Over the years I’ve seen two accidents like this, one at an MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station).

One was contaminated fuel and the other was putting JP-4 (Yep, it was that long ago) in a recip.

Neither one got out of the pattern before they went in.

most small planes are fully capable of crashing in a 500 foot landing and everyone walking away, I know in my 172 there would be No Problem. There must be more to the story here

Saddest of all is they have three children. One child elected not to go. Now the kid has no family.

Maybe because he spoke out about the vax, not being on the Dem payroll.... There are no “accidents” when it comes to political figures and planes, IMHO.

That would make sense.

Moab is at 4000’. That’s enough to break out the charts for a loaded plane.

Kind of like me taking off my short dirt strip when it’s 110-120 outside, with a density altitude of 6000 ft plus at a 500’ msl runway. Gots to be prepared
