A federal judge has rejected HP's (HPQ.N) bid to dismiss a lawsuit claiming that it intentionally designed its all-in-one printers to be unable to scan or fax when they are low on ink, as a means to increase profit by boosting ink sales.
Customers in the proposed class action said HP concealed how its printers enter an "error state" when low on ink, disabling scanning and faxing functions that do not require ink, and forcing them to buy unnecessary, high-margin ink cartridges.

Now, the plaintiffs in this lawsuit claim that even when the HP ink cartridge is empty or not in the HP printer, the scanning or faxing capability is disabled until a new, full HP ink cartridge is put into the printer.
Here is U.S. District Judge Beth Freeman's opinion that the case of Freund v. HP, Inc. can now go forward.
PING for later.
HP Printer.
Has (intentional) Problems.
For our home use, I buy cheap Brother laser printers (used to buy HP, but way too expensive and poor value) and an Epson scanner. Keep the devices separate to optimize both functions. I put the scanner on a shelf in the closet because I use it so infrequently. It’s so easy to pull it out when I need it, plug it into the USB port and start scanning. These days, probably 75% of my “scans” are quick snaps with the phone.
We have an HP, and stopped using their ink program, because invariably the cartridge they sent to us wouldn’t be accepted as authentically theirs. It became a hardship. Still use their cartridges, but I go purchase them at the store myself.
It’s very unreliable. I pretty much hate them but I’m not in a position to replace this POS printer.
Watch the settlement consist of a voucher good for $5 off the price of an HP printer...
But, but, but it’s a feature.
No such issues on my 8 year old Brother AIO and my one year old Canon AIO. But I NEVER update the firmware beyond what it comes with. And I never buy OEM ink beyond the starter cartridges that it comes with. No issues.....period.
But all is fair in business... Fraud, Deception, sabotage of product, one sided contracts, etc.
“Has (intentional) Problems.
“
Yep, but the business cult around here is absolutely fine with that. All is fair in business. There are no rules or criminal acts when it comes to making the god all mighty dollar.
“Fraud, Deception, sabotage of product, one sided contracts, etc.”
CEO Carly Fiorina’s business strategy plan... *sell the printers cheap, mark-up the ink refills 1000%* and make unending money on the backend.
“I buy cheap Brother laser printers”
ditto ... and brother color laser printers are pretty decent if you need high volume color ...
Yeah, as a businessman myself who has been self employed all my life I am getting sick of the “private business rights” cult. It is an excuse to scam and take advantage of customers without remorse. Why? Because the all mighty dollar is more important than anything else in life. It is immoral as a concept. Crooks...
Should I consider Liz Cheney as a peer and support her “business rights?”
It is twisted. They can’t even consider the concept of price gouging as wrong. There is no such thing in their minds.
Here are the facts that are currently scamming this economy. And no honest businessman can deny this reality which is helping kill our economy and nation. Short term gouging towards a cause and effect of long term destruction, including their own destruction. It is stupid business and self destructive.
If a businesses costs increase 25%-30% and they increase their markup 100% to 150% is this not price gouging?
f 25% of the businesses are hit with cost increases, yet the 75% who did not have cost increases lie about it and jump on the bandwagon to also jack up their prices anyhow price gouging?
Is raising the price of a product “only” 25% but simultaneously reducing the product amount 50% price gouging? Especially if their over head costs did not increase?
No, even as a businessman I have to point out it is crooked ass greedy price gouging. So although mostly, this economy is not quite all Biden’s fault. The cult of greed is taking advantage of the situation, ripping off the people and letting Biden take all the blame. They are perpetuating and exacerbating the situation and the dishonesty is pissing me off.
So I support hitting these greedy companies for scams like this... It is bad business for everyone in the printer industry. Better to hit them now than to let the rest jump on the band wagon with the same crooked scam and let it become an industry standard.
It is time for fair business again. Where is Ralph Nader when you really need him? lol
I am a big fan of Brother monochrome laser printers. No, they are not especially fast. But mine is at least 15 years old, Has been through the dust of 2 construction projects, and still works pretty darn well. $100 printer and uses cheap cartidges. They are still under $150 without looking too hard.
I used to do something similar. Cheap Brother B&W laser, separate scanner and a color inkjet for photos. Then I moved and space was at a premium so I got a higher end HP small office printer/scanner/fax. So far no issues.
I tired a Color Laser but the quality was fine for simple graphics, but not images I needed to print on occasion.
Could they teach that drummy thing to wash dishes or something else useful?
I retired my HP printer, as it kept breaking down and was generally a piece of garbage. Doncha know, HP wanted me to send BACK any remaining ink cartridges! I told them to get stuffed and ignored their request. Incredible; they make an awful four in one machine and still want to profit on its failure for you.
I went to print recently with my epson xp-7100 inkjet and the cyan (blue) went empty so I changed it with a new cartridge. The new cartridge was creating streaks.
I did a head cleaning then a nozzle check and had to do this 3 times and the rest of the ink was now running down.... $$
I cannot print using standard without getting streaks but now use High quality so I do not get streaks.
I print every week as recommended to keep the ink from drying out and I only bought the printer 11 months ago for $225.
Epson XP-7100 Nozzle checks with Clean cycles in between done a few days ago.....
Maybe a ecotank ink printer is best as at least the ink bottles are cheaper.
Below are my nozzle checks and clean cycles

I can spend $550 for a epson ecotank printer with 6 colors or $330 that has 4 colors. Both will have eventually have streaks from the reviews. They have many models to choose from. I am thinking of getting the Epson EcoTank ET-3830 with 4 colors
Or buy a HP ink tank and have the same issue or a bricked printer due to firmware issues... : )
At least you have big bottles of ink to do the nozzle checks and head cleaning. The ink is also much cheaper to buy in the big bottles so you can use the Epson ink and not the 3rd party ones as you may do with the expensive cartridges which are 1/3rd more to double then 3rd party.
I swear the cleaning cycles are designed to use up ink. They could easily add another cartridge with solvent to clean without using the ink itself.

Epson printers are junk. Very unreliable.
