None of whom, on that list, appreciates the truth regarding the energy that is required to feed people.

Chicago is completely surrounded by nuclear plants. Shutting them down is madness.

“I’m in North Idaho and did a permanent 26 kW Briggs & Stratton generator installation 18 months ago.”

______

Smart move. It may be this coming winter or in a couple of years, but I suspect you will be happy you did so.

We are lucky in Georgia. Decades ago, our leaders (both D and R) decided to go ahead with the completion of the plant Vogtle nuclear plant. Unit Three just went online and is producing energy and Unit Four should go online by the end of the year or the first quarter of 2024. There were delays, often caused by environmental groups and the federal government, cost overruns (of course), and it took a lot longer to complete than the first two units. This is the first nuclear plant to be built in the nation in decades.

Yes, I’m sure the regular increases in our power bills are partially due to the plant, but it will be worth it to have reliable electricity while other states are suffering from brown-outs due to their ignorance and “green-energy” dreams. I’m also sure they will demanding we be fair and “share” our energy with them in the future. We may have to implement “border control” at that point.

Replacing reliable energy sources with very unreliable ones may cause reliability issues. No sh**!

Natural gas. At least until O’Biden & Co ban that. I figure that Idaho will be about the last place in the USA to ban natural gas.

AND building less than you are retiring. How STUPID can these people be? Unless there’s some other strategy at work here, like making the masses freeze, starve, and never travel more than 10 miles from where you were born.

About how much does a whole house gen. set cost? Rough estimate.

I spent around $1,000 for a 7KW gen set. It will power everything but the A/C.

How much fuel does that hog use in a 24 hour period? Might as well go to a hotel.

“About how much does a whole house gen. set cost? Rough estimate.”

Probably around 5 to 6 thousand dollars these days, I would think, and then another thousand or so for installation. If strapped for funds, you can buy a small generator for approximately 700 to 800 bucks sufficient to run an electrical cord through a window and use it to power a lamp, radio, and a few appliances intermittently, plus use it to recharge your laptop and cellphone. (Keep the generator outside!!)

However, if you are expecting an extended power outage, a whole house set-up would probably be a good idea. Always make sure you are knowledgeable on its use and let your power know company you have a whole-house generator installed in your home. There have been occasions where power-line repairmen were electrocuted due to power running back through the lines due to a generator installation.

And here is a power company’s statement on generators and safety.

“How much fuel does that hog use in a 24 hour period? Might as well go to a hotel.”

________

A hotel is not going to do you much good if the power is out there as well, even if they have a room available. How will you pay for the room? Cash? Do you have that much in your wallet right now? What if their power is out and they can’t take credit cards? And in such a situation you are stuck in the dark with people you do not know and can’t depend upon. If their power is out their restaurant is only serving limiting choices of cold foods, much as you could eat at home. Vending machines would soon be empty of candy bars and snacks. Why not prepare to stay in your home near neighbors with which you are most familiar?

You have to add safety concerns into your cost-effectiveness calculations.

A generator can be ran a few hours each morning and afternoon to allow time to chill the refrigerator and charge flashlights and communications devices. Flashlights, battery-powered lanterns, oil lamps and candles can be used for basic lighting at other times. Plus, during the daylight hours you just open the blinds and curtains and function with what natural light you have.

Unless the government soon reverses their “green energy” insistence, we are all going to be facing these questions sooner than we can imagine.

LOL...we have not had a big outage since we installed it! I’d have to look up the fuel consumption.

We thought about the hotel approach, but we were concerned about outages hitting during family get togethers, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, parties, etc. This keeps us going for those events if the power goes out.

The unit is specced at 26 kW, but we normally wouldn’t use more than 5 or 6 kW. It’s sized to handle our summer AC, the electric oven, and electric clothes dryer. When we ordered it, Briggs was selling a 20 kW unit. During our order delay, they increased the unit to 26 kW at no extra cost, so we went with that.

Energy engineers have warned, the greater the penetration of a grid by intermittent and unreliable (“Renewable”) energy, the less stable the grid becomes. And the more difficult the challenge to manage it.

Well...since you mentioned it things are even worse than just being unstable. If that was the price for getting off coal that would be one thing. The reality is that in order to accommodate the rapid fluctuations caused by the UUS (intermittents/unreliables) the nat gas generators have to run in open loop mode which is far less efficient (say 40% max) instead of combined cycle (say 60% max).....bottom line being that the UUS provided nothing by way of a net increase in generation.

It is all a big scam with instability, huge costs and all kinds of other aggravation as part of the package.....and while I don’t classify myself as an energy engineer directly involved with the grid I deal with energy engineering daily in enough related fields to see that this is what is going on.

My guess is a 26kw generator will use 1 gal/hr. Propane is around $3.00/gal, so to run that hog will cost around $75.00/day in the summer and probably over $50/day in the winter. To me that is big bucks.
