Trump allies say DeSantis running illegal ‘shadow campaign’ for president

President Donald Trump took his attacks on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to a new level Wednesday, as a super PAC linked to the 76-year-old accused his would-be rival of ethics violations tied to what it calls DeSantis’ “shadow presidential campaign.”

A draft of the 15-page letter by Make America Great Again Inc. calls on the Florida Commission on Ethics to investigate DeSantis, alleging that the 44-year-old has violated a slew of state statutes as well as federal campaign finance laws.

The complaint refers to DeSantis as a “de facto candidate for president” and claims that the governor is “leveraging his elected office and breaching his associated duties in a coordinated effort to develop his national profile, enrich himself and his political allies, and influence the national electorate.”

“Governor DeSantis’ failure to declare his candidacy is no mere oversight,” the complaint alleged. “[I]t is a coordinated effort to specifically designed for him to accept, as unethical gifts, illegal campaign contributions and certain personal benefits that are necessarily intended to influence his official decision to resign from office under Florida’s resign to run law.

“Governor DeSantis’ ham-handed maneuverings,” the complaint added, “have rendered him irreparably conflicted and have left the statehouse vacant.”

The letter includes as evidence that DeSantis has “abused his office and abdicated his official duties in favor of pursuing his national political interests” the fact that the governor has “met with influential figures in early primary states,” “is vetting operatives in early primary states,” and “met with individuals who are likely to play key roles in his presidential campaign.”

The letter asks that the commission impose one or more penalties including impeachment, removal from office, public censure, ballot disqualification and fines.

The complaint refers to the Sunshine State law that states: “No person may qualify as a candidate for more than one public office, whether federal, state, district, county, or municipal, if the terms or any part thereof run concurrently with each other.”

DeSantis comms director @tarynfenske has rebuked the complaint filed by Trump's Super PAC, calling it “politically motivated" and "inappropriate".

What is INAPPROPRIATE is @GovRonDeSantis violating election laws & FL's Resign To Run law by illegally coordinating with PACS.— Laura Loomer (@LauraLoomer) March 15, 2023

----------------------------

DeSantis is making a poor move by trying to change the Resign to Run law. That protected his state from ambitious subversion by those that will use it in the future and dismantle Florida then possibly the U.S. (if it's not done already).— Dustin Faulkner (@dloydfaulk) March 15, 2023

They can cry all they want to, but they are in violation of the law!

Resign to Run Ron or remain Governor.— sweetness420002🍊 (@sweetness420002) March 15, 2023

Violating election laws is what's "Inappropriate".

Not calling it out would be complicit and aiding the crime.— cheryl Johnson (@cherylJ93231699) March 15, 2023

‘The letter includes as evidence that DeSantis has ... “met with influential figures in early primary states,” “is vetting operatives in early primary states,” and “met with individuals who are likely to play key roles in his presidential campaign.”’

So in other words, DeSantis has done what every other politician does before they decide whether to embark on a presidential campaign?

Me thinks The Donald is going off the deep end. His Iowa speech was terrific but these DeSantis attacks are weird.

Trump is jealous and afraid of DeSantis. It’s an obsession.

There is no such law? I admittedly am having a difficult time in distinguishing Ron Desantis from Joe Biden? Or maybe Florida law does not apply to Saint Desantis?

What is the benefit of beating on RDS rather than BiXiden and the Biden Crime Family [protected by the Fey Wray and the Meritless Garland]?

Exactly, why is DeSantis attacking the leader of the party by getting into the primaries and not waiting until 2028 and supporting the leader of the party? Do you see Democrats going after Biden, a washed up demented man with no chance of winning?

I’m not a fan...but on the other hand.....what Trump throws at him will be nothing compared to what the MSM and Dems will do him. Lets see if he can withstand it and rise above.

On a completely separate note, I think all of this is bad for our country. Lots of great successful people sit on the sidelines as opposed to serving their country because they don’t want to be part of the circus.

Scum-bucket Democrats have been doing crap like this for eight years, now a Trump super PAC is doing it to DeSantis? The scum-bucket super PAC is just as bad as the Democrats

No such law. BTW I love DeSantis, he has done a great job for Florida. The reason he is running a Shadow Campaign is because he is waiting for the Florida Legislators to change the law this session.

Section 110.233(4)(a), F. S., provides in pertinent part that no employee in the career service shall:

“Hold, or be a candidate for, public or political office while in the employment of the state or take any active part in a political campaign while on duty or within any period of time during which he is expected to perform services for which he receives compensation from the state.

I think it would be wise for him to honor his earlier statements that he would not contest Trump and just serve out his governor term until 2028. The fact that he is teasing a campaign lowers him in my eyes.
