How Ukraine is winning the social media war
BBC News ^ | October 16, 2022 | Paul Adams

After almost eight months, the war in Ukraine hangs in the balance. Ukrainian counter-offensives continue to make progress, while Russian forces are still pressing elsewhere.

But on the internet, it's a very one-sided affair.

"This is a meme nation," says Olena, a Kyiv entrepreneur who manages teams of social media volunteers.

"If this was a war of memes, we would be winning."

Olena is not her real name. Due to the sensitive nature of the work she and her teams carry out on behalf of Ukraine's defence ministry, she has asked to remain anonymous.

Her teams work round-the-clock, reacting within hours to news from around the country, producing punchy videos, often set to music, for the ministry's audiences at home and abroad.

Who cares about the social media war when hundreds of Ukrainians die each day, when there is no air defense and when more and more civilians have no electricity?

The right bank of Kiev is currently covered in darkness this evening as the Ukrainian authorities began to implement their planned power outage to save energy, these power outage are due to continued Russian strikes targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

You know, it used to be expected that propagandists hid their efforts, in order to ensure they at least had some illusion of plausible deniability. The truth of the matter would never be known until after the war was over.

Now they openly brag about it.

Bizarrely transparent, but also strangely repugnant in a way I can’t put my finger on.

I don’t know, Dr Goebbels was pretty upfront about what he was doing. One of his official titles was Reich Minister of Propaganda.

Let’s add the West’s insane “ price cap” on Vlads energy. Nigeria and other energy suppliers just stated they will NOT accept the West’s $60 a barrel cap.

Another Western “ strategy “ that has already backfired before it hits implementation.

…..and as the price is now expected to skyrocket without OPECs participation, the EU is guaranteed to experience a very, very “deep” freeze. Why is the brain dead West so intent on suicide?

….and Vlad says Checkmate, again, and again. We are now looking at huge EU government changes, ( did you see the non western news about the huge protests in England, France and Germany?) most likely deposed, yes, Johnny, Vlad is winning. De industrializing the EU is far much better than dissolving NATO.

Excellent!

Just think of all the advertisements the Social Media giants can send to the Last Ukrainian Alive when this war wraps up, they'll make Billions!

It isn't, though.

But they are now winning on the actual battlefield. The question is whether they can keep it up for long enough to either affect a change in policy in Moscow, or just beat the the Russians back into their own country.

I’d concur.

Perhaps it’s because propaganda is ultimately a lie masquerading as truth designed to fool the public, which at a root level conveys a contempt for the public as something one can pull the wool over.

Ukraine is winning the social media war for one simple reason. Russia invaded Ukraine. Sending tanks across international borders to settle a dispute has been taboo in Europe since 1945. Especially when the dispute involves a major land grab and when the country doing the invading is perceived as a superpower invading a weaker neighbor.

Is Ukraine a good actor? No. Were there pro-Russian districts within Ukranian territory? Yes (and Danzig was a German city and there were Sudeten Germans as well.) Did Moscow have reason to complain? Maybe. Probably. I don’t know. But you still don’t unleash the panzers, not in Europe.

We’re not talking here about cosmic equities and grievances that Russia might have pursued through negotiation. Nor are we talking about NATO’s handling of the situation in the preceding years. Those are questions that not one person in a thousand in the US or the EU will take the time to understand. The question posed was how Russia lost in the court of public opinion.

Short of coloring his hair black, pasting on a silly little square moustache, and staging a dummy attack on a Russian radio station just over the border, leaving behind some corpses in Ukrainian uniforms, it’s hard to see what more Putin could have done to forfeit any chance at all in the court of public opinion. You don’t unleash the panzers. Not in Europe. Period.

Putin didn’t think this mattered because it was supposed to be over in a couple of days, if Ukraine bothered to fight at all. Miscalculation is a bad way to start a war. But Putin has a lot of company on that score.

Haha! As a side note, it doesn’t take a lot to win the meme war, where the other side is censored.

Remember when we bombed Serbia for 78 days to force them to give up part of their country to Albanian Muslims?

Putin remembers.
