A Multnomah County jury has slapped Walmart with $4.4 million in damages after a Portland area man said in a lawsuit that a theft prevention employee racially profiled him for “shopping while Black” and tried to have him ejected for bogus reasons.
Michael Mangum said he felt “disrespected and embarrassed” after a worker at the Wood Village Walmart began watching him, then summoned police and falsely claimed Mangum had threatened to smack him in the face.
“When he said he’s going to call the police, I couldn’t believe it, because I hadn’t done anything,” Mangum, now 61, told The Oregonian/OregonLive in an interview. “The only thing that was going through my mind was, ‘You have the right to be here.’”
The litigation was a landmark test of a recently passed state law that allows lawsuits against anyone who improperly calls law enforcement with the intent to discriminate or humiliate another person or to unlawfully ban them from property. State Rep. Janelle Bynum, D-Clackamas, spearheaded the law after a constituent called the police on her while she was canvassing in 2018.

I did have a problem. Was in Cracker Barrel and they seem understaffed as maybe not paying enough for the area and with the inflation. Anyway, literally a busload of a certain group come in. They had to make sure they were well taken care of because of previous lawsuits. Anyway, we wind up waiting an hour after ordering to get our food. The manager said they had lost the order ticket.

The employee should be arrested for making a false 911 call. But I struggle to understand why Walmart is at fault ... unless Walmart never bothered to give employees any training in this regard.

Don’t worry - they can raise prices on goods that you buy to cover it.
No way was that episode worth $4.4 MILLION dollars.
That’s not just recompense for an unfortunate situation. That’s bully tactics to cow people into appeasing whatever victim class is complaining. It’s punishment of the supposed offender.

This isn’t a case of discrimination really. This is a case of someone getting their jollies by making false accusations against somebody they just don’t like.
There can be severe consequences to someone who has been falsely accused of a crime when the police get involved. Therefore the consequences for making a false accusation accusation at this level should also have severe consequences.
Hopefully this decision deters other people in Oregon from using the police to carry out personal agendas.
why anyone would open a business in America and subject themseleves to such insane ‘discrimination’ type lawsuits is beyond me.
Reverse discrimination is fair game these days. My wife and I are constantly treated rudely by a certain demographic bc of our skin color. I’m not afraid for telling them they are being rude. They don’t like it. ABW are the worst.
It seems that when average folks see blacks shopping the first thing that comes to mind is, "Black criminal. Keep an eye on him/her". All the anti discrimination propaganda the left has attempted has turned back on them. Funny how human nature works itself out.
Or perhaps the security person was properly trained on the behavior of shoplifters and this guy was behaving suspiciously.

The name alone “Cracker Barrel” is raciss. It implies that it is a restaurant for WHITE people.

I actually HATE Cracker Barrel. Give me Chili’s any day or even McDonald’s over Cracker Barrel.
No, but it warrants closer and more vigilant surveillance.
Then punish the individual. They can be fired for that kind of thing at a minimum. The person accused can press charges, as well.
The corporation did not do this. I don’t see that they are obligated to pay out that kind of money to resolve it.
Can't have that now, can we! Walmart should just shutter that store.
