Republicans need a leader without Trump’s 2020 obsession
New York Post ^ | June 19, 2022 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 06/19/2022 4:16:18 PM PDT by karpov

It’s understandable that Democrats would want to constantly revisit Jan. 6 — to invoke it, investigate it and sacralize it even.

It’s a mystery, at least from a certain level of abstraction, why Republicans would want to have anything to do with that day or want to fixate on the 2020 election.

The party is on the cusp of a midterm triumph, has enormous openings on the economy and education thanks to Biden administration stumbles and left-wing overreach, is making inroads among Hispanic voters and has a well-stocked political bench that Democrats should envy.

Yet the GOP is stuck litigating the past almost entirely because its putative leader in Mar-a-Lago is incapable of admitting error or defeat and will never stop trying to excuse and explain away his infamous conduct after November 2020.

You can argue that Jan. 6 wasn’t an insurrection; that the composition of the committee is unfair and lacks the adversarial element that has always been presumed to be central to the workings of such bodies; that the revelations or supposed revelations from the committee are being overhyped; and that Trump, whatever his failings, didn’t commit crimes and shouldn’t be charged with one.

In fact, I agree with every one of those propositions. But none of them makes Jan. 6 any better or makes it good.

It’s not quite true, as is often said, that every election is about the future. Republicans waved the bloody shirt of the Civil War for years. Democrats ran against Herbert Hoover for as long as they could. Republicans still talk about Jimmy Carter.

In all these instances, though, a party made a focal point of a low and embarrassing moment for the other side, not its own.

He offered Pelosi (and I believe the mayor of Washington,
D. C.), at least 10,000 troops to keep the peace. She
refused.

At the rally, he urged people to walk over to the Capital
Building and protest peacefully.

I know you think he could have avoided this, but that would
required him being silent as the coup was carried out.

He shouldn’t have to do that.

If he had stayed home, the media would have stated that
he did so because everything he charged was a great big
lie.

He would have handed them a propaganda gem either way.

I’m getting really tired of people trashing Trump but
telling me they’ll still vote for him.

He did absolutely NOTHING wrong.

“He should study up on Patton.”

I have a feeling PDJT knows more about Patton than anyone on this forum. He attended military academy and I can’t imagine Patton wasn’t intensely studied there.

Rich Lowry wants the GOP to go back to importing and amnestying a permanent Democrat majority.
Rich Lowry was calling for expelling illegals and reducced legal immigration back when Trump made money from illegal workers in his hotels and was funding pro-amnesty politicians

They like to believe that they would have the enthusiasm without having candidates that matter.

We love having Trump, DeSantis, Cruz, etc

We don’t want Bush, Romney, Cheney, etc.

A big tent isn’t worth it if it means dilution to the point of meaningless.

I am sure that Trump has studied Patton. My manner of speech was to suggest that Patton’s confrontational style was what Trump would need. FR is saturated with memes of Trump in warrior garb because it is what we wish were true. Frankly though, I think he is still the New Yorker he was, and largely uses his mouth.

Were he to return to the White House, “Lock her Up” would have to be more than just words. If not, then we will just be going through what we are now, again.

Absolutely! Three YUGE mistakes by PDJT:

He didn’t deal with Hillary.

He didn’t deal with Soros.

He didn’t kick Fauci to the curb on Day One of the Pence-Fauci Show.

Actually, while the coup was in progress long before the election, Trump refused to fight.
