TUCKER, Ga. (AP) — Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams is proposing a big teacher pay raise in her run for governor, saying Republican Gov. Brian Kemp’s much-touted $5,000 across-the-board increase is not enough to recruit new teachers and retain current teachers.
“We are losing the fight for our children’s future,” Abrams said Sunday as she accepted the endorsement of the Georgia Association of Educators.
Georgia has long had the highest average teacher pay in the South, but Abrams is proposing a $1.65 billion bump over four years.
Abrams said that would boost Georgia, which currently ranks 21st in pay nationwide into the top 10.
Kemp’s $5,000 raise was a signature 2018 promise that he finished delivering this year. But Lisa Morgan, the president of the Georgia Association of Educators, said Georgia teachers have fallen behind inflation despite that.

Teachers are typically poll watchers.
What we need are less increases in teacher pay and more clubs on the heads of unionized teachers and their families who support them.
Paying a teacher more doesn’t make the teacher better
No, I’m saying there’s way too much cushion for the pushing.
No, but she knows all about BIG
The “gap” hasn’t even been elected yet and she’s already giving taxpayer dollars to the union freeloaders.
Trying to BUY votes.........
Pandering. Pathetic.
Democrats only ‘help’ democrats.
If I am a parent-—I am sending my kids to public school to learn basics & more.
I pay property taxes for this ‘education’.
My child needs to know reading—writing-(Especially Cursive) and Mathematics. They need to know history-—both American & World history. They need to know how to act in social situations like classes.
They need to know to respect the teachers & the other kids.
THEY DO NOT NEED CRT or ANY LBGTQXZY information.
IF your kids are not getting the BASICS to merge into the employment market-—the teachers should NOT BE GETTING any more money-—they should be getting less or even fired.
The FREE education system in the USA was designed for EVERYONE to have that as a MINIMUM and for employers to have a steady stream of recruits.
Each state should be setting standards & the “DEPT OF EDUCATION” should be abolished. They have screwed everything up.
Yeah. I’ve lived in Georgia my entire life. I’m knocking on 70 years. I fully well expect Abrams being elected. Kemp and Rassberger, et al helped in the steal. Perdue didn’t have a chance. Surprised Trump endorsed him but it is what it is.
Of course she does. Need those teachers unions votes! And teachers are doing the toughest jobs these days- -trans indoctrination, CRT, global warming hype.
The reality is that about 40% of Georgia’s “children “ were made technologically unemployable by the invention of the automatic cotton picker and the microwaveable pancake. No amount of funding changes that. You’re not going to be able to go to the Congo Forest exhibit in the Bronx Zoo and teach calculus.
Teachers aren’t worried about marginal increases in pay. They are worried about working conditions. There are exponentially more assaults on teachers every year than there are against cops.
One of my cousins is a retired school superintendent in rural Wisconsin. He used to get truckloads of resumes from teachers in Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit and other urban centers. The applicants knew their pay would be less than where they were. However, they knew they would be physically safer and they might actually have students and parents who cared about learning. They could practice their craft in an environment that appreciated them.
Librarians are classified as Teachers in Georgia.
They don’t need more pay. They get a good salary, they have a GREAT health insurance plan, and a lot of other benefits.
I retired with 33 years in. I only worked 31 1/2 but I got to convert my sick leave into retirement time. The pension plan is great. Between that, and my wife’s SSI, and, when mine starts in August, we’ll be taking in more than I made when I was working. We still have the same insurance, but, pay less for it.
They get WAY more than they think they do.
yep.
If we had real teachers, not a bad idea.
Since we have woke talking *sshats, they can shove their raise suggestions up their little whateverholes.
If the teachers want a pay equal to what other workers are earning, then perhaps they should surrender their tenure and pension benefits.
And yet a lot of people want them to arm themselves and be the first line of defense in for the school.
