Texas Police Lieutenant Says Cops Were Reluctant to Engage Gunman Because ‘They Could’ve Been Shot’

A Texas Department of Public Safety official said responding officers were cautious as they entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas because “they could’ve been shot.”

Nineteen children and two teachers were murdered after authorities say an 18-year-old male entered with a rifle 12 minutes after he crashed a car near campus.

The New York Times reported the shooter was inside the school for about an hour before officers finally breached the classroom he was in and shot and killed him.

Reporters demanded answers during a contentious press conference Thursday afternoon. State law enforcement officials addressed the public a day after some parents with children in the school said they were prevented from going in by officers.

One girl inside the room reportedly bled for an hour after she was shot. She died at a hospital. It is unknown if that hour might have saved her life.

On Thursday’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, the host discussed the Tuesday’s horrifying events with DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez.

Blitzer asked his guest if officers at the scene made the correct choice to wait for backup before they went after the gunman.

Olivarez said officers were inside the school quickly, and they heard gunfire when they arrived. They called for reinforcements, he said. The officers in the building waited for a special tactical team to show up as they isolated the shooter to one classroom.

“Don’t current best practices, don’t they call for officers to disable a shooter as quickly as possible, regardless of how many officers are actually on site?” Blitzer asked him.

Olivarez said the officers who arrived at the school quickly might have been shot had they attempted to take out the gunman alone. He said,

The active shooter situation, you want to stop the killing, you want to preserve life, but also one thing that – of course, the American people need to understand — that officers are making entry into this building. They do not know where the gunman is. They are hearing gunshots. They are receiving gunshots. At that point, if they proceeded any further not knowing where the suspect was at, they could’ve been shot, they could’ve been killed, and that gunman would have had an opportunity to kill other people inside that school.

Oh, and 18 minutes are now 'missing' from the archive of the police radio for that day.

cops have never been required to risk their lives... this is why arming the first responders in the schools is more important.

first thing, replace no gun zone signs with targets that show a tight grouping with your head here graphic.

Getting kind of hard to support the thin blue line these days.

First the cops standing back while Antifa tries to murder peaceful protesters, now this.

Good thing firemen aren’t as worried about getting burned or having a building collapse on them.

Good thing EMS aren’t as worried about getting infected.

First responder’s job is to actually respond.

So many conflicting reports on what the cops did, something is very wrong here.

The deletion of evidence should amount to presumptive proof of malfeasance.

Cops can't win. They "do something" and risk sharing a prison cell with Derek Chauvin.

They do nothing and have to live with themselves as cowards, responsible for the murders of schoolchildren.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Uvalde PD sees some suicides in the coming weeks.

No way in hell I'd ever be a cop.

Cops and Priests used to be martyrs who would die to save people.

Now cops hide and Priest won’t say mass because of the flu

Never confuse cops for marines. They will not risk their lives for you.

They could be shot any day of the week.

And while they were worried about could have been getting shot, they sacrificed on the altar of their own cowardice, the lives of a classroom full of 10 year olds who were being slaughtered by being shot.

After the huge assault rifle shootout in CA decades ago, police started carrying rifles in the truck. They should also carry some type of swat ballistic shield so they can approach and engage in these situations, rather than waiting for swat to get there an hour later.

One of the first mass shootings occurred in Texas in the 1960s. The response then was very much different then today.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Texas_tower_shooting

Civilians took up arms against the shooter. It was brought to an end when two police officer and a civilians stormed the tower killing the shooter.

(As a combat infantryman I know what it is like to go up against an armed opponent. Been there, done that and have a CIB to prove it).

Today the police are more interested in disarming citizens and preventing them from defending themselves then going after a gunman busy killing children. Shame on them.

IMO, it always is.

Only those who do wrong try to hide their actions. If someone is doing right, there is nothing to hide.

Decades ago, PUBLIC SAFETY of innocents was the priority. Now it is officer safety above all. An utter disgrace.

I can kind of understand a reluctance to get “Chauvined,” but openly admitting they didn’t save a group of little kids because they were afraid of getting shot is just BS and cowardice on their parts. And if they kill themselves for their cowardice, good riddance to some bad cops.

Appears to this ignorant observer that the Texas police were ordered to stand down ...I ain’t that stupoid...reason? Opportune gun control advancement event. Appears these people will let our kids get killed in order to get our guns. My cat can even figure this one out real quick. Mouse + claw into hole = 5 seconds, not one hour

I would use your post as a tagline but it might be a bit too long I fear.

It is spot on though, and illustrates the downfall of our civilization.
