Can We Have Some Real Talk About Ukraine?
Town Hall ^ | 14 Mar 2022 | Kurt Schlichter

Time to get real. Ukraine is an equal opportunity crisis because it provides politicians of both parties a chance to be wrong, although it allows the Democrats the opportunity to do what they do best and be much, much more wrong. For the Republicans, it lets them indulge the desire of some to return to a time when America could focus its moral firepower – if not its firepower firepower – upon a readily-identifiable baddie like it did during the Cold War or the War on Terror. For the left, it allows them to create a moral panic to replace COVID, which, naturally, requires that we Americans "sacrifice" even more of our freedom and money.

From the perspective of someone who actually trained Ukrainian troops in Ukraine, commanded US forces, and attended the US Army War College – though it's kind of the Chico State of war colleges – the whole way our elite is approaching the crisis is an epic clusterfark. Don't believe anything anyone tells you – and certainly, sanity check whatever I'm telling you, too – most of these insta-experts on intra-Slavic conflict know absolutely squat-ski. Moreover, their remarkably dumb observations and credulous acceptance of conventional wisdom, which has proven long on conventional and short on wisdom, are being presented without any kind of strategic context. They don't know where this crisis came from and certainly have no clear notion of where they want it to go beyond the vague and unhelpful idea that they want Putin (which they use interchangeably with Russia) to "lose" without knowing what that even means.

And if our elite can't articulate a short-term end-state, it sure can't articulate one for five years from now. It is in America's interest to wean Russia from China over the long term, but are we aiming at that? Do we want to do such damage to Russia that we can never hope to recover it from China's orbit? After all, China is the big enemy. Russia is just a Shell station guarded by Paul Blart, except instead of a whistle, he's got H-bombs.

"Putin bad" is true, but it's insufficient. It's time for some real talk about America's interests, which may not be Ukraine's interests, and how we are pursuing them.

Any such hopes under this administration are moot.

To paraphrase one of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson:

“Europe is continent in a constant state of war. Better for us to stay out of it”.

This is exactly how I feel

Can We Have Some Real Talk About Ukraine?

No, it's beyond America's ability to do so.

Biden is not bombarding Jacksonville with cruise missiles and HIMARS.
Biden is not putting Republicans in black vans.

Exactly.

I find that whenever the Democrats, George Soros, the Liberals, and the media want the same thing it’s usually not good for us.

There’s a lot of questionable activity going on in Ukraine over the last few years... Is Biden just trying to protect their money laundering operations?

Interesting perspective. One of the many problems in this conflict are the conflicting agendas within each side. It makes understanding the truth and the best outcome tricky.

Biden was installed to bomb the economy.
To lock down freedom and liberty..
To do the deep states bidding that Trump wasn’t going to do..

Biden need not bomb a city.
Democrats have sewer/cesspool dangerous holes called cities and it’s wise and prudent to stay out of them. Especially at night

The situation in Ukraine does not directly involve the USA. We do not have a treaty involving Ukraine. We can’t even make up a story that would convince anybody, like Iraq/Hussein/weapons of mass destruction. We need to stay out of it.

But the media-democrat complex needed a major distraction to get us to stop thinking about our two years lost to government incompetence in handling covid, and about the rapidly increasing cost of everything. Dems immediately began saying “Putin gas price hikes”, showing where their minds were at.

The “crisis” in Ukraine was puffed up beyond all reasonableness as the crisis du jour, replacing the covid crisis as the latest in a long series of crises that the government got us into and that it claims to be able to get us out of.

Good points. but it is only because China's Puppet Emperor is still too politically weak to do so. There are quite a number of people in detention without charge or trial whose only crime is that they were somewhere in the vicinity of the U.S. Capitol protests on January 6, 2021. If this administration had Putin's power, there is no telling what they would do.

Let me put it this way, if something can’t go on, it won’t.
The US political system has put the country on a road that is looking worse everyday, and at this point nobody can miss it. Everybody is bleeding, including the people who expected to do well out of this.

He makes some very good points. The issue I see that he did not address is how China is observing the reaction of the West, and the U.S. in particular, to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. And I personally think a strategy of "bleed Russia dry and destroy its economy" is the one most likely to convince China not to engage in aggression of its own, because it would not like the consequences. Especially the economic ones.

So in that narrow sense, the hyperventilating virtue signaling by masses in the West, as irrational as it may seem, actually helps accomplish that goal.

So Putin did the bidding of the people who needed the distraction? Hmm. That is more of a conspiracy scenario than even I can handle.

The reaction to Putin vs Ukraine is global, and not dependent on US media hype. Even every Euro right wing party is against Putin and pro Ukraine, from the Sweden Democrats to the German AFD to Zemmour and Le Pen in France to the Spanish Vox. This all is bigger than US politics.
