Six Democratic governors — five of whom are up for re-election in November — have urged Congress to adopt legislation suspending the federal gas tax until next year as prices at the pump hit record highs after President Biden ordered a ban on importing Russian oil.

The six governors — Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Jared Polis of Colorado, Tim Waltz of Minnesota, Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, and Tony Evers of Wisconsin — noted in a letter to House and Senate leadership Tuesday that the average price of a gallon of gas had hit $4.173 that day, surpassing the previous high from the summer of 2008.

No, prices started going up as soon as Biden took office and cut off that pipeline.

Isn't the federal tax a fixed amount, not a percentage of the retail price?

I’ve never understood why gubmints make more profit off a gallon of gas than the gas companies do.

When I first read the headline I figured the dems had a bill to increase the gas tax but may hold off ...

That’s what they will do at some point — increase the fed tax because they will complain they are getting less taxes because people are cutting over to EVs.

That ... and adopt a mileage tax. The mileage tax may be instead of increased gas taxes but I would not put it past them to try to enact both.

Wow 18 whole cents—how about you RAT governors pause your state and local taxes—that might actually help offset the price hike.

They’re starving, hungry pigs at the trough of the US Taxpayer. The more they get, the more they want and crave.

I have a 21 gal tank on my truck. That means if I have to fill completely up I will save a whole $3.60. Finally I will be able to afford a hamburger.

Governor Jelly Belly Prickster is up for re-election, too, but he won’t give Ill-Annoy any break from his oppressive fuel taxes. We get what we elect.

“..Screw these people with a broom stick...”

A stiff wire brush would be better...and insert it sideways.
They were all in on the “Great Steal. Some of em were on the murder of the nursing home folks as well.
Now that the pain of their actions are setting in, they want a bail out. These demons are despicable.
They can all go ESAD.

The Federal Government should give all those on welfare and those who pay minimum income taxes free electric cars. How else will they afford to obtain them?

I'm all for it....BUT I assume they'll be pausing their STATE taxes as well right?

According to the Federation of Tax Administrators, Pennsylvania tacks on 57.6 cents per gallon — the highest state gas tax in the US. Wisconsin adds 30.9 cents per gallon to pump prices, Minnesota has a 28.5-cent-per-gallon tax, Michigan’s gas tax stands at 27.2 cents per gallon, Colorado adds 22 cents to every gallon, and New Mexico adds 17 cents.
