His son John did some acting but has been mostly directing for the last few decades. John Stockwell was in the Tom Cruise movie “Losin’ It” (1982), played Cougar in “Top Gun” (1986), and was in the lead having to kill the killer car in “Christine” (1983).

He was very good in the film version of DH Lawrence's Sons and Lovers. It's sort of a forgotten film today even though it was nominated for Best Picture along with 6 other nominations.
