There’s a re-edit of the movie that’s like 4 hours long that erases what it can of the weirding modules and follows the text very closely. If you can find it, it’s far better than Lynch’s forced 2 hour edit or the extended version

When the kid with green hair first appeared I screamed and cried and we had to leave. I was terrified.

There is a backstory to his role as Ben in Blue Velvet. Lynch told him to go nuts. He gave him nothing about the character. Zero. Just the script.

The costume, makeup, everything was Stockwell. Lynch hired him knowing whatever he came up with was going to work.

Arguably, without Ben in the movie, it fails.
