The scramble to airlift tens of thousands of foreign nationals and Afghan allies from Kabul entered a frantic new stage today - with military chiefs admitting they can only continue as long as the Taliban allows it.
As desperate British and US citizens, and allies who helped Western forces during the two-decade intervention, try to flee reprisals, armed guards from the Islamist regime have surrounded the capital's airport and seized control of all access points.
Underlining the abject humiliation of the West, the Taliban's political chief Mullah Baradar arrived in Kandahar province on Tuesday after 20 years of exile as the group held its first press conference, confirming their grip on power and insisting it would respect women's rights under Islamic law.
Although the atmosphere is less chaotic inside the perimeter than the extraordinary scenes yesterday - when several people plummeted to their deaths after clinging to departing planes and another was crushed to death in landing gear - witnesses on the ground revealed that there is still carnage outside.
Streams of people, some clutching immigration documents, have been queuing under the guns of armed Taliban as Apache helicopters buzzed through the air. Former Royal Marine commando Paul 'Pen' Farthing, who runs an animal sanctuary in Kabul, warned that they were being told to come to the airport but left at the mercy of crowds and Taliban forces who have it under siege.
The clearly distraught veteran, who said he had been separated from his wife, said British military needed to go outside the perimeter and 'rescue some of the people they have been sent to get'. 'People are going to die,' he insisted. (story continues at link)

This might be project DESTROY USA. Bring 50k Afghanis with unknown amount of Covid and Taliban or other factions of terrorist sprinkled in.
Also think about how many of those 5000 prisoners may be coming to the USA.
If you are going to post things that are factual and that can be easily disproven, please put a >sarc tag on it. Otherwise, you will appear to be DU troll or an ignoramus.
And ironically, guess why they chose Biden for Obama's #2 for eight years?
Because, as Obama put it himself, "Biden has a reputation for f*cking things up".
I used to think people calling for Trump to be reinstated after they proved voter fraud was real, was too much of a long shot.
But now I am praying for it to happen every day.
I was trying to speak about the past, wondering if Obama, in his 8 years of power, converted Biden.
There is no way for our troops/citizens to get out except by air, and no nearby ground, naval, or air support. Nor are there any natural defenses and they are surrounded by a hostile city. Who is supplying the food and water? A few shoulder fired missiles or AAA batteries can stop all air traffic.
This is a total catastrophe in the making.
I read where the US military is in contact with the Taliban leadership to workout an orderly withdrawal...but that could change at any time....
What is our end game now? Oh, right. We have none that is under our control.
You’re exactly right, this is a poop show of the highest order, just to show you how bad it is, think if Biden was somehow run out of office, Kamala Harris would take over, how is that any better, we are screwed for the next 3+ years
It might be possible to drop paratroopers on a small installation, such as Camp Dwyer, which has a runway that is long enough for a C-17, and might hold its weight. It has few civilians around it, so it should be possible to secure a decent footprint without having to deal with the swarms in Kabul, and it was secondary enough that you would not expect the Taliban to have a large number of men looting/guarding captured weapons and supplies like you would expect at Bagram. Fly troops and supplies in to Camp Dwyer on big planes, shuttle civilians and troops there in helicopters, and fly'em out out on the big planes.
That might work very well. Except for the guys still on the ground when the Taliban manage to get artillery within range of the airfield...
