The Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday that it will move to grant California permission to set stricter climate requirements for cars and SUVs, a reversal of a key Trump administration policy.
The step, coming days after the Transportation Department withdrew Trump-era restrictions of state tailpipe emission rules, could help pave the way for a broader climate deal with the nation’s automakers. The EPA will hold a virtual public hearing on its proposal on June 2, and will take comment on the plan until July 6.
Alliance For Automotive Innovation CEO John Bozzella, whose members produce nearly all of the cars and light trucks sold in the United States, said in a statement that he hopes Monday’s announcement is “a step to a revised national program that includes California and brings all automakers under a unified set of common requirements and ensures a level, competitive playing field.”

Just build high speed rail. Problem solved.
Lol. They have failed in that. Although I wish they hadn’t. It’d be cool to have high speed trains and subways all over the country. Will never happen.
>>Bottom line is the Car companies will go along with whatever comes of this because they have to manufacture and sell vehicles.
the gas companies don’t, they only make the gas that california demands as needed
Let the “Retrofit” industry expand in California as it has to bring imported cars up to California’s standards for years.
WHen the goal is “zero new cars” it’s not a game “to play”.
Shame on Trump for not doing this in the first days of his presidency. I think the GOPe rolled Trump.
I live in Texas. Probably time for me to get a couple of horses.
“Could someone please explain to me the difference between the government of California and the government of Fascist Italy at this juncture?”
In Fascist Italy, the trains ran on time.
In California, the train tracks are under construction, which is way behind schedule and way over budget.
“ Thank God people in California make decent money. Average 62K that means half make a ton more. They will need it for a car.”

I foresee a growth industry for restoring gasoline cars and trucks.

Could someone please explain to me the difference between the government of California and the government of Fascist Italy at this juncture?

Yes its easy. The government of California exists to this day; the government of Mussolini, like Fascism, no longer exist, as it was destroyed during WWII and El Duce was hung upside down in a public square with his mistress after they had both been beaten and shot. Capisce?
Well, he got a lot of other stuff done...
So, shame on him?
“It would be amusing if other states argue that they can do the same. Especially states that decide to relax such standards.”
Texas should allow made in Texas cars without the thousands of enviro and useless safety regulations.
I bet they would sell for less than $10,000. Then Texas would have an auto industry and the other red states would get cheap reliable cars.
Some 25 years ago P.J. O’Rourke wrote of his ideal pickup truck.
He called it the Ford 1500 Global Warmer. On start, it belched out enough black smoke to be seen from satellites.
One of several thousand reasons, perhaps more, to be leaving California.
When Los Angeles was almost totally shut down by Covid last spring./summer-—The smog was the worst it has been since 1970.
“Stop all air traffic to and from LA and San Fran..et al.
“
Cut off the flow of water from the Sierras and the Mono Valley.
Would that do anything? Lighter standards would still be covered by vehicles built to stricter standards. What would happen though if many states decided to mandate lifetime warranties on vehicles built to stricter than state requirements, including used vehicles those brought in from other states?
Just like school textbooks.
And hasn’t that worked out well.
Italians speak better english.
