Trump to Make Supreme Court Nomination Friday or Saturday. President has five women under consideration to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

President Trump said he would nominate a Supreme Court pick on Friday or Saturday and has five women under consideration to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as Senate Republicans lined up behind him and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), rejecting Democrats’ calls to let the winner of the presidential election make the pick.

Mr. Trump maintained that the replacement of Justice Ginsburg, who died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at the age of 87, should happen swiftly. “We won the election and elections have consequences,” he said Monday morning on Fox News. “We have plenty of time.”

The president’s list has been narrowed to two leading candidates, according to people familiar with the matter: federal appellate judges Amy Coney Barrett of the Seventh Circuit, in Chicago, and Barbara Lagoa of the 11th Circuit, in Atlanta.

The president said he has three other people to choose from, though declined to name them. He said he was looking for someone who is young and could serve on the court for a long time. “We’re looking for a good person.”

Judge Barrett, 48 years old, was confirmed to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in October 2017 in a 55-43 vote. She is popular among social conservatives and was a finalist for the post in 2018 when Mr. Trump chose Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Judge Lagoa, 52, previously served as the first Hispanic woman on Florida’s high court.

More than 20 Senate Republicans said over the weekend that they back moving immediately to fill the vacancy, and many are expected to follow suit as the week gets under way. Two Republican senators—Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—broke ranks this weekend, saying they oppose action on a nomination before the presidential election.

“Trump should tweet that he will nominate Merrick Garland”

He shouldn’t tweet that. That’ll lock him in.

However, floating his name as a trial balloon would be awesome :-) ... my only concern about that is that the base would be pretty torqued off if they weren’t in on the joke :-).

Oh, also, Lagao got way too many Dem Senator votes for comfort when Trump first put her through the process.

Maybe because at that time they didn't think she was worth expending the political capital. The stakes are much higher now.

What political capital?

They had no qualms about voting against many of his other judicial nominees.

That's not saying that it will necessarily be a woman, is it? It's a big mistake to limit yourself to female candidates for all the obvious reasons; namely, first and foremost, it's exactly what the rats want you to do because they know it increases the chance she'll turn around later and stab you in the back on some crucial issue before the court.

If there is one thing that I'd like to see front and center, in your face, is a ruthless probabilistic approach in all his decisions, so he would eke out every little extra percentage point increase in his success rate, to turn the odds in his and in the country's favor. And you don't do that by limiting yourself to female candidates.

I would use Janice Brown as the nuclear option if I had to make a recess appointment.

Want to bet that almost no black youngsters have even heard of her? She is the kind of example they really need. She came up back when real racism was still common, and prevailed over it.

Yes. Roe v Wade is not ready to be overturned right now. Patience, grasshopper!

How many lives will our patience cost?

Britt Grant was Solicitor General of Georgia and one of the filers of the brief against an AR-15 ban.

What our political opponents (Democrats) think of Britt Grant:

Oppose the Confirmation of Britt Grant to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit

https://www.afj.org/issue/gun-safety/
“Britt Grant (Eleventh Circuit) argued that a city ordinance prohibiting possession of AR-15 style weapons or large-capacity magazines violated the Second Amendment.”

More on that (other issues)...

She’d have been my pick from Trump’s short list, too.

But I don’t think Ivanka would go for a defense of large-capacity magazines! ;-)

She should visit the land of the rednecks anywhere out here. It’s not stylish. It’s even a human wasteland from the effects of two generations of widespread drug abuse and casual sex (thanks to the academic left). But with countless millions of standard capacity magazines distributed throughout rural and small town areas, it’s as peaceful as ever. Much safer than than the big cities that are full of old, beat up, stolen pistols.

When will the Justice be buried? According to Mosaic law, she should have been in the clay already.

That was a law that protected the community from disease by not having decaying corpses lying about too long, back before refrigeration and chemical preservation. It matters less now, except to the truly faithful.
