I doubt KGB officer Putin cares at all. But by enthusiastically turning the Russian people back to their church, a much more effective unifying bond than Communism ever could be, he certainly set the stage for his people to demand action.

Oddly, the French are head and shoulders above the UK militarily. More front-line naval vessels, more fighter aircraft, more combat brigades.
And despite our making fun of their surrender proclivity, they are tenacious fighters, (and often dirty - just ask the Algerians).
