Defund the universities: Why should tax payers send money to elite colleges that are are almost 100% hard left-wing bubbles?

Fed up with Defund the Police? Worried that hordes of “peaceful protestors” might soon show up to burn and pillage your neighborhood? Want to make your views known but unsure where to begin?

Here’s a way to hit back: DEFUND THE UNIVERSITIES.

It’s no secret that much of the radical ideology fueling the Black Lives Matter and Antifa riots are the product of our dysfunctional higher educational system. Universities today are almost 100% hard left-wing bubbles, openly hostile to any conservative thought. They are intolerant of opposing opinions, the very opposite of the kind of dialogue intended for higher education, and so desperately needed today. These Molotov-cocktail wielding radicals are the end product of years of propaganda from left-wing professors.

Colleges may hate conservatives, but they will be forced to listen – and change – if you target their pocketbooks. And colleges and universities are vulnerable, especially with the current double-whammy of lower student enrollment and the coronavirus taking its toll.

Here’s a modest outline of how to begin. Ideally some enterprising legislator will help to put these into law. If BLM can force “radical change” on society why can’t conservatives push through a few modest proposals of our own?

Stop Donating:

Every alumnus should write to their college ASAP to state that not a single penny will be given until things change significantly. This is your chance to be heard, so let them have it with both barrels! (I’ve attached my letter to Duke below). In fact, go it one better and tell them that you will do your best to convince other alumni to stop donating as well. We are in an ideological war – you need to show them whose side you are on.

Yup.

Have no idea why Republican legislatures keep voting to send money to the indoctrination centers.

No government funds should go to Universities who promote the destruction of the United States.

At minimum, it they receive government funding, they should be required to teach and have students pass, a basic course on the Constitution and American History.

At least students would have something to compare their indoctrination with.

The Hillsdale College Constitution courses would be a good template.

Solve the student debt “crisis” by getting refunds on tuition from the schools.

Their conspicuous prosperity over the last 30 years is a direct consequence of democrats seeing them as perfect propaganda machines. Education, science, literature all abandoned for leftist power.

Have no idea why Republican legislatures keep voting to send money to the indoctrination centers.

*************

Because Republicans by and large have no principles, convictions or courage. That’s the fundamental problem. The secondary problem is that we don’t hold them accountable for their dissembling. That part is on us.

In addition Universities should cease providing athletic scholarships. Go back to the original purpose of institutions of higher learning. If you want to have athletics fine, but they will be students first, athletes second.

Division 2 and 3 schools have been doing this forever and most of them seem to be able to field entertaining football, basketball and baseball teams.

I believe the reason Republican Legislators keep sending money to the Leftist State Run Universities is that the voters are not challenging the Republicans about their actions.

We need to begin asking tough questions for our Republican Candidates to State Offices. Make these candidates squirm.

Question 1: “Why is the Legislature sending money to State Run Universities where more than 80% of the Professors have a Leftist ideology?

“Tax the endowments...”

Yes. Also tax foundations - Rockefeller, Carnegie, Clinton, Obama. Eliminate the tax deduction for contributions to non-profits.

States should either privatize their state funded universities or begin exercising the right of the employer to fire employees.

They will listen when there’s money at stake.

The cushy jobs of leftist professors and their like minded colleagues in administrative positions will be threatened. Nothing is more important to them than money. Nothing.

Every lefty I have ever know loves money.

I never understood. Figured they just didn’t see it as that big of a problem. Too busy stuffing their own pockets with cash or whatever.

Now they have a homegrown violent revolution on their hands, cooked up and run out of the same places.

Really no excuse for being clueless this long.

The writer of this commentary lists three things to do. But he ignores voters demanding the Republican Legislators stop sending money to State Run Universities.

Halt Student Loan Guarantees:

The higher education system is kept afloat by a sea of student loan debt, much of it guaranteed by the Federal Government. This amounts to a huge subsidy, estimated at $100 to $250 billion per year, funded by our tax dollars. It’s long past time to stop this madness– let the universities compete in the marketplace without these kinds of perverse incentives (and watch those Diversity Deans collect pink slips).

Tax the Endowments:

Again, hit them in the pocketbook. Why should Harvard not pay a penny of taxes on its $40+ billion endowment? It’s always irked me that someone like Elizabeth Warren can rant about businesses “paying their fair share of taxes” while taking a high six-figure salary from an uber-rich institution that doesn’t pay any taxes at all. Tax them now!

Rather than defund them, I’d like to see the Leftist/Liberal playbook and rules used against them. IE....Affirmative Action

Demand that if the school wants to continue to get public money, research grants, etc, 50% of their staff, professors, lecturers HAS to be Conservative. Lets see what happens then the ‘Cancel Culture’ falls on their shoulders and they’re out of a job because of their political ideology.

How fast will the Left want to eliminate the idea of Affirmative Action?

You are correct. We the people need to start asking tough questions. Why is our tax money being sent to Leftist Run Universities?

Politicians are not clueless. If no one is questioning them, politicians will not do anything.

We all need to start asking our candidates for State Legislatures some tough questions about funding State Run Universities.

We need to be asking A LOT of questions. The Republican Party too often gives us the right answers, but not the right actions.
