Take a first look at Apple and Google's ambitious new COVID-19 contact tracing technology that will send you a notification if you were near someone who has the coronavirus

Apple and Google have embarked on their biggest collaboration ever over the past month, building a platform that will turn nearly every smartphone on the planet into a tool for tracking COVID-19.

Now, the two companies are providing a first look at how the new technology will work on iPhones and Androids.

New screenshots published Monday show how the contact tracing software will use Bluetooth to detect other smartphones in close proximity and alert people if they come into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Apple and Google will push the new software to people's smartphones automatically later this month, and it's meant to be incorporated into COVID-19 apps developed by government health agencies across the globe.

Can’t use Apple stuff, not wired for reverse polarity.

Knew to ignore Gargle a long time ago.

Releasing the health status of a specific identifiable individual, complete with their phone number to a private entity (Google and Apple) without permission.

Not legal

“HIPPA violation.”

Once the tracking and reporting technology is perfected with COVID-19, government will quickly extend to other contagious diseases. The annual flu still kills more people than COVID. Why not have the app warn of people diagnosed with any contagious disease - flu, AIDS, measles, whooping cough, pneumonia, common cold? After all, the government and health “experts” will insist the information is only being used for public health reasons.

The next step of course is to link the phone app to medical records at your Doctor’s office so your phone can broadcast to others the most recent information about your potentially contagious diseases.

Bill Gates has touted technology implanting a chip at the time of vaccination. Certainly that chip could be read by a cell phone and report back to the government if you have or have not received the government mandated vaccine for coronavirus and any other disease (flu, pneumonia).

Your cell phone can also communicate with other devices such as your automobile. Wouldn’t it make sense to have your automobile report to the government when you are speeding, if your driving suggests you are intoxicated or even if you appear to be fatigued and therefore possibly not alert enough to operate a vehicle. What an easy way for the government to levy fines on rule and lawbreakers. No need to have police hiding in the bushes waiting to catch a speeder by radar. With AI technology the motorist’s vehicle can immediately report when a traffic violation occurs. How can government resist the potential to collect billions of dollars in fines by monitoring behavior?

Speaking of safety, many people are uncomfortable around firearms. Leftists would certainly argue people with concealed carry permits represent a potential risk to unarmed citizens. Perhaps your cell phone should broadcast to the cell phones of nearby people the fact you have a concealed carry permit and therefore might be carrying a firearm.

If this COVID-19 tracing app is implemented, and the government requires your personal health situation to be made available to the app, what remains of privacy in American will disappear.

There’s a CV-19 quarantine sign on a house a block from me.

Does that count?

“Whatever happened to HIPPA”

Same thing that happened to the Constitution.

I’ll just switch to an early 2000’s flip phone.

Retired my old Motorola Razor flip and took over my wife's LG flip. Same capabilities, option to turn tracking off. They can take pictures I gather, but no Facef*ck or anything like that.

Wife has some sort of Samsung with all the colored M&Ms that I cannot use. Maybe if I took an interior decorating class?

It won’t matter if bluetooth is on/off. I was reading several of these article this morning. Initially it is an app download and a few weeks later it is simply in your iOS updates.

I am looking at my phone the past two days with it’s notification that an update is waiting...

This is phone to phone comms that runs on bluetooth. People will be snitching each other out without knowing. How messed up is that? They always knew giving out free gubmint phones would come in handy some day.

Less intrusive alternatives include the use of Bluetooth signals to log a user's proximity to other cellphones. On 10 April 2020, Google and Apple jointly announced that they would integrate functionality to support such Bluetooth-based apps directly into their Android and iOS operating systems.

I still have a Samsung flip phone on a legacy T-Mobile prepaid plan. My coworkers tease me about my phone. I use less than 400 minutes a year. I pay $50 once a year for 500 minutes before the expiration date. Unused minutes rollover for another year.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.

Hopefully it won’t be installed on Apple Watches.

New meaning of trac(k)-phone.

p.s. Verizon or AT&T, etc. can do that already, without an app. Mickey Mouse knows where and when you sleep.
(Or your phone sleeps. Same thing for vast majority).

Better pull the battery just to be sure.

Purism is finally shipping it’s open source linux(Debian) based phone, https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/ $749
The $1999 model is the same thing but with all parts from secure USA sources - Made in the USA

They’ve got hardware switches for most things including bluetooth.

I’m thinking they’re about to sell out of phones really quick. Gone like TP.

Freepers will tell you you should just build your own phone.<

There are alternatives, with more coming soon.
In the interests of full disclosure, I'm not a Linux guy, but stuff like this is making me reconsider for mobile use, at least.

Linux Phones:
Librem 5
Pine Phone
