Take a first look at Apple and Google's ambitious new COVID-19 contact tracing technology that will send you a notification if you were near someone who has the coronavirus

Apple and Google have embarked on their biggest collaboration ever over the past month, building a platform that will turn nearly every smartphone on the planet into a tool for tracking COVID-19.

Now, the two companies are providing a first look at how the new technology will work on iPhones and Androids.

New screenshots published Monday show how the contact tracing software will use Bluetooth to detect other smartphones in close proximity and alert people if they come into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Apple and Google will push the new software to people's smartphones automatically later this month, and it's meant to be incorporated into COVID-19 apps developed by government health agencies across the globe.

I was just pondering this morning whether they would push this app to phones or if it would be something you voluntarily download/install.

They go on to say it might be a bit wonky and that fedgov agencies will have the source code to play with/tweak.

What could go wrong?

Buahahahahha.

Apple and Google?

The ones who aided Obama to use an app for crating Arab Spring to destroy Syria and Libya?

Or Google who helped design draconian face recognition app and tracking app for the Commie Chinese so that each citizen is tracked?

Yeah, right. I’ll line up for that! ( sarc.)

Can this be avoided by refusing to allow updates?

"What could go wrong?"

In major urban areas, probably 10% (or more) of the people have been exposed, so the alarms will be going off like firecrackers.

Sounds like they will download and install it without your consent. If that is not the case, Apple and Google need to make it very clear.

This is not good. Once this has been used, it’s very easy to change it slightly and use it for other purposes.

I thought we were on the downside of the CV19 epidemic! This tells me that it’s nowhere near over. One does not spend millions of dollars to develop a system that will be obsolete in 2 months. Reopen by end of May? I doubt it.

The idea of forcefully entering your home and removing you to a quarantine facility (because you were near someone who may have been near someone) will begin with this! Turn your Bluetooth off.

Can I get it to notify me if an idiot progressive liberal is near me ? That would be more helpful. They are more dangerous than someone with a cold.

How about if someone is near that has drug resistant Tuberculoses or HIV. That would be helpful also.

We all know it will track gun owners, constitutionalists, Trump supporters, and Globull warming deniers.

I don't even take my cell phone out with me anymore. Haven't for months since this madness started. Not prepared to have Big Brother from Orwell's 1984 watching everything I do.

I thought we were on the downside of the CV19 epidemic! This tells me that it’s nowhere near over. One does not spend millions of dollars to develop a system that will be obsolete in 2 months. Reopen by end of May? I doubt it.

And it's worldwide https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_apps#List_of_apps_by_country

This is not good. Once this has been used, it’s very easy to change it slightly and use it for other purposes.

Just like people warned that the Patriot Act could be used to spy on citizens and it was, against Trump and team. I could see this being used to wrongfully connect people to a crime because they stood within 10 feet of a criminal.

Our cheap pos cell phone is four updates behind. For some reason, one got missed and after that, it didn't have the prerequisite for further updates. It's running Android 5.1 and most new apps won't run on it - incompatible. Our phone should be on Android 6.0 - we may have a very valuable pos phone soon.
