SYDNEYAustralian Foreign Minister Marise Payne has cautioned China against attempts at economic coercion as Australia pushes for an investigation into the CCP virus pandemic.
Australia last week called for all members of the World Health Organization (WHO) to support an independent review into the origins and spread of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus, commonly known as the novel coronavirus, and is lobbying world leaders.
Payne said in a statement on April 27 that Australia had made a principled call for an independent review of the COVID-19 outbreak which started in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
We reject any suggestion that economic coercion is an appropriate response to a call for such an assessment, when what we need is global cooperation, Payne said.
Chinas foreign ministry retaliated against Australias proposal. Chinese ambassador to Australia, Cheng Jingye, said in an interview with The Australian Financial Review on Monday that the Chinese public could avoid Australian products and universities.
China is the largest export market for Australian wine and beef. During strained diplomatic relations with China in 2018, Australian wine faced import delays in China and some Australian beef exports were also previously suspended for a period.
The Chinese embassy in Australia has previously warned Chinese students about what it said were safety risks in traveling to Australia.
Payne said an honest assessment of the pandemic would seek to strengthen the WHOs role.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang dismissed calls for an investigation during a daily briefing in Beijing, though not commenting specifically about Australia.

I did read that one of the first things the CCP did was to completely wipe out Australias supply of PPE. Sounds like Chinas new official tone isnt going over too well
Because just what any country wants is people who eat endangered species scanning the countryside for exotic cuisine while sprinkling lord knows what viruses around...
Aussie Aussie Aussie
RE: I did read that one of the first things the CCP did was to completely wipe out Australias supply of PPE.
As they will for the USA as well.
This should make us and our allies RETHINK about vital products being made in China and our depending on them to supply us with these products.
Good for the Aussies. Too bad the Euros couldn’t grow a pair.
As the Aussies say : "Good on ya ! "
The Euros are too inculcated with terrorists to think about much else.
I’m waiting to see which way Princess Trudeau go’s.
Tell China to kill your Aus!
I did read that one of the first things the CCP did was to completely wipe out Australias supply of PPE.
How could they do that? Isn't Australia's current supply of PPE stored in Australia? If you mean they refused to supply Australia with further PPE well there are other manufacturers of PPE. Australia should look into non-Chinese suppliers anyway.
I heard that people from the mainland descended on their stores and bought them all out
Something similar happened here too. Chinese companies instructed their workers here to buy up all the ppe in our stores to be sent home. Of course now the Democrats are running an ad 24/7 saying that everyone knew (Feb 7th, I dont think so) that the CCP was lying about its numbers and Trump sent them tons of humanitarian aid anyway and thats why theres no ppe, which is a lie.
I’m certainly no expert on such matters but it’s easy for me to imagine Australia paying a very heavy price if they proceed...only because of the differences in size and the balance of trade figures.I’d say it’s much better for them to support and assist...quietly or not so quietly...with the efforts of economic heavyweights like the US,the EU,Japan or South Korea.
She needs to take out a full page ad in one of the main papers that says “Hey China, are you threatening us? Threaten this!” with an upraised middle finger prominently displayed.
I think we know
Trudie goes
both ways.
I don't know about the mainland, but Chinese nationals were instructed by the Chinese government to Chinese businessmen in foreign lands
to purchase and ship as much of the supply of n-95 masks and PPE's to the Chinese mainland.
The Chinese government had cornered the market on the necessary healthcare equipment, without telling the rest of the world about the virus,
and are now selling what surplus equipment that they have at premium prices, since they are in such short supply, and the demand remains high.
That definitely sucked, but I had to laugh about just how quickly their washable masks came down in price, now that they are competing with every American woman in possession of a sewing machine!
Masks for $20 each? NOPE!
