Grocery stores prepare for tightening social distancing requirements

As we head in to the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in North Carolina, social distancing has become absolutely necessary to reduce exposure for everyone.

Many stores that are still open have started announcing new measures this week for tightening social distancing requirements.

Harris Teeter has announced that they will be implementing customer capacity limits at all stores to further protect associates and shoppers.

According to their press release, "Beginning April 8, Harris Teeter will limit the number of customers to 50% of building code capacity to further support physical distancing in its stores. Store associates will monitor the number of customers to ensure the capacity limit is maintained."

The move comes as Gov. Roy Cooper weighs options for new social distancing requirements for retailers that could force stores like Harris Teeter to limit their capacity even more.

Or a bunch of people who think they can be safe from this “virus” by not contacting it.

Seriously, it’s either so bad with no cure and everyone eventually gets it, or it isn’t. And we are willing to give up living our life, seeing family, for some indeterminant period of time or we aren’t. And if we are all going to die from it anyway, why are we limiting our lives now?

If these are my last days because of this virus, then I want to spend them with the people I love the most, my family. There are worst things than death.

I went to a Dollar General yesterday because they had a cheaper price on an item I needed than the grocery store where I had just done my weekly shopping. I casually mentioned to the cashier that it would be nice when all of this was over. She exploded saying when people like me stopped coming into the store it would be over. Stupid me tried a little more small talk and said, well there are a few schools of thought on all of this...that was the fire to the fuse. I left as quickly as possible because her hysteria was getting out of control.

>> All carts are wiped down with sanitizer as they are taken into the store.

While this is no doubt true (I saw it yesterday, did a Costco run), don’t think it’s a be-all on sanitizing. They’re using Clorox wipes. Clorox wipes do not contain bleach, it’s just a brand name thing. The sanitizer is quaternary ammonia, a very common food service sanitizer. I bought some tablets early on that are for making gallons of quaternary ammonia solution, and have some in a spray bottle.

Unfortunately, in digging into it, it doesn’t appear that quaternary ammonia is very effective against coronaviruses. At least, they’re not on the FedGov list of Stuff What Is Good For Sanitizing Against CV-19. Or weren’t a few days ago when I looked.

While it’s likely someone useful, don’t think it’s as good as wiping down with alcohol.

My $0.02.

The labeling on Clorox wipes says it takes four minutes to kill a virus.

I’m in a hot town (I presume), due to one of those nursing home incidents that happened a week or so ago. For all I know, I could be packin’ virus already. My eyes are stinging, and Chinese Heme Burglar Virus can cause conjunctivitis if it gets into the eyes. We’ll see. If it goes away, I’m probably fine for now, but will wear a mask in the stores.

Deinitely more contagious than the butt sex virus, but if you breeze by an infected person, only briefly near him, I suspect you’re not very likely to get it unless he coughs in your face or some such.

A company here in Pittsburgh called Bossa Nova Robotics makes robots for WalMart. The roam the aisles taking shelf counts for replenishment. I have never actually seen one but they’re getting a lot of press locally.

I think you’re nuts, but if I had a significant other, I would be socially distancing myself inside of her on a regular basis during this unfortunate stay-at-home order.

It wouldn’t surprise me if some states shut grocery stores down. I know that’s insane but some people are having that conversation. A reporter ask Trump about shutting down the grocery stores.

Just don't say here on FR that people should stock up on needed food, supplies, and medicine (and only say that).

You may get attacked for "encouraging hysteria!"

Ask me how I know?

Yeah, sure, let’s just cut folks off from life preserving nutrition needed daily by all humans. If you wanted to start mass riots, panic, and mayhem, I could not think of a better way.

Roy Cooper is a dictator who is enjoying every minute of this! North Carolina is in excellent shape with a death rate of 0.015 as of yesterday. He should be talking about opening some of the least affected counties for business instead of more restrictions! My county has 23 cases and only one death, a death rate of 0.04. That one was aboard Camp Lejeune and was a known exposure, not from community transmission. I pray every day that the people will be so upset with him that he gets defeated by such a margin that he cannot steal enough votes to win!

This is all a load of HorseSh*t. Give everyone the who gets the Kung Flu the cure/treatment of Zpak and Hydro and lets get back to work. Hospitals are not overrun and stressed, the death toll is not going to even surpass a bad flu season and all of the models are off by at least 30 fold.

I stopped at Kroger on the way home from the office, (yes I’m still working even though we’ve been essentially shut down)...and to my disgust most of the bread was sold out including no white bread and only a couple of loaves of wheat bread. So I decided to go to the TP aisle and sure enough all shelves empty.
Not sure why but it really pissed me off. I felt like, ‘cmon people, aren’t we beyond this by now?’. People are STILL hoarding even though distribution chains have clearly been uneffected.
