Remember Nero blaming the Christians for the burning of Rome? Today, it is an op-ed writer for The New York Times who blames evangelicals for the spread of the coronavirus in America — and that would mean white evangelicals, to be sure.

Stewart has no support whatsoever that science-denying evangelicals are influencing the president’s decisions. To the contrary, wherever his gut and his optimism might lead, it appears that he is following scientific guidelines in order to save as many lives as possible.

That's true, but there was nothing "dark" about it. When Trump said that, Easter was three weeks down the road, which Trump hoped would be at a point when the virus had peaked and new cases and deaths were dropping. Since Easter is a major day for millions of Christians, he hoped that there could be some loosening of restrictions by then.

It may or may not turn out that way, but would Stewart have griped if a Democratic president expressed hope that a hypothetical pandemic might be dissipating by New Year's Eve, or the Super Bowl?
