Truckers Are Keeping American Supply Chains — and Americans — Alive
Breitbart ^ | 03/18/2020 | Joel B Pollak

Groceries began reappearing on American store shelves this week, thanks to the strength of a supply chain that includes farmers, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers — all of whom are literally risking their lives to stay on duty.

A crucial part of that supply chain is the American trucker, who makes sure that goods are delivered in a timely fashion. That is always the case, but it is especially true in the sudden global emergency we face today.

My dad drove a truck for over 50 years.

He had the classic trucker’s tan. Right arm pale as a ghost. Left arm tanned like a lifeguard.

A very sad day was when we had to take away his driving privileges.

I miss that old fart.

"I wish this were true here in Colorado. Shelves have been bare for weeks."

Give it some time. The article didn't say that all shelves are now full. It said "reappearing". Although a major concern of mine, I had faith in the American supply/distribution system.

If you think about it, with all the hoarding, many companies are making money right now and will have to re-stock. Of course, the US hasn't been hit the worst, but I have faith in our FREE ENTERPRISE system.

The problem is not that the supply doesn’t exist it’s just that there isn’t enough truckers to replenish the whole U.S. all at one time.
Especially since morons stripped almost every major, and minor, store from sea to shining sea.

“The last time truckers were really appreciated in general culture was like the late 70s.”

If I recall correctly, it was circa ‘75/76 when the CB radio craze was at it’s height.

I’ve been reading that with the closing of a lot of roadside services — restaurants, truck stops, even rest areas in Pennsylvania — truckers’ jobs just got more challenging.

"Reliance on any one system is a bad idea. I am of the opinion that the US rail system is nearing the breaking point. We simply need more train tracks and distribution centers."

It is NOT one system. It includes air, rail, and especially trucks to get product to market. BTW, we have plenty of distribution centers because we are the biggest consumers in the world. Just got a package from Amazon yesterday deliver by? Why do you think we are the most prosperous nation in the World? It all revolves around FREE ENTERPRISE, something the Socialists disdain.

This pandemic is going to be a learning experience for many, especially China.

Yup. 4 to 6 cents per ton per mile.

Two to three truckloads per rail car-unless its a stack train.

Get the trailers to a distribution center and let the transfer companies take it from there.

Problem is that the rail companies have abandoned a lot of rural subs and gone to their main line only.

Just at the local gas station/party store. Its the local watering hole for us old geezers to spin the yarn.

Attendant said her boss gave her a heads up that she was informed that “all establishments that carry, or sell food “perishables” will be required to shut down and, one, either go to window service only or two, delivery only.

We asked her when? And she said that it is being seriously considered.

That includes truck stops.

By the State-at this time.

Dam these panic sob’s.

He had the classic trucker’s tan. Right arm pale as a ghost. Left arm tanned like a lifeguard.

Sort of like the farmer's "tractor tan" that was on the upper part of the hands and forearms up to where the rolled up sleeves started.

I remember some locomotive engineers who had the "trucker's tan" but reversed.

Absolutely. If all this is over by summer and I take my usual long summer car trip, I am going to make sure and thank a few at the truck stops I stop at. In 2020, no trucks means no food, no medicine — and no toilet paper.

well they’ll basically have a straight run out on the highways with veryone staying home, making good time will of course make a difference as well.

Some retired truckers and others are also stepping up.
